Portuguese Television
Television in Portugal was introduced in 1956 (test broadcasts) by Radiotelevisão Portuguesa (now named Rádio e Televisão de Portugal), which held the nationwide television monopoly until late 1992. Regular broadcasting was introduced on March 7, 1957. Colour transmissions were introduced on March 10, 1980. Digital terrestrial television (DTT) was introduced at a very late stage when compared to other countries in Europe and with limited channels. According to the European Audiovisual Observatory it occupies the last place out of the 34 European countries with the weakest offer on digital terrestrial television. Due to this, most Portuguese are subscribers of cable (HFC) or IPTV (DSL or FTTH) platforms, in percentages higher than in the rest of Europe and these platforms are well developed with many channels. Sara Alexandra Lima Tavares (; 1 February 1978 – 19 November 2023) was a Portuguese singer, composer, guitarist and percussionist. She was born and raised in Lisbon, Portugal. Second-generation Portuguese of Cape Verdean descent, she composed African-, Portuguese- and North American-influenced world music. Ferry Boat Fred
''Ferry Boat Fred'' is an Australian children's programme which was first broadcast in 1992 on ABC. The main character is a ferry on Sydney Harbour in Sydney, Australia named Fred, along with his older sister Kate, two other ferries, Lou and Bill, as well as Jean, a really jolly and colourful submarine. There is also his Captain, a Koala who is always found asleep behind Fred's wheel (due to koalas finding it difficult to stay awake all day). Fred has a voluntary deck hand named Pete, a "know-it-all" Pelican (also best known for his catchphrase, "No worries!") who befriends Fred and follows him around the harbour, assisting Fred and tying him up at Wallaby Wharf. Alice Cruz
Alice Cruz is a Portuguese anthropologist who became a lawyer and the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights of people with leprosy (Hansen's disease). Life Cruz was born in Ecuador and she first established herself as a medical anthropologist. She was impressed by the people she met during her work in Brazil, Bolivia, Ecuador, and South Africa. These people, who had leprosy, bravely demanded dignity. The Human Rights Council voted to establish the mandate of a Special Rapporteur for a period of three years. In November 2017 Cruz, who was then teaching law in Ecuador, was appointed as the UN Special Rapporteur on the elimination of discrimination against persons affected by leprosy and their family members. Cruz had spent her career with an interest in leprosy and in trying to reduce the stigma and derision that accompanied it.
