1993 Citizen Cup
The Citizen Cup was a women's tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts. It was the seventh edition of the Citizen Cup and was a Tier II tournament on the 1993 WTA Tour. The tournament took place from 26 April to 2 May 1993 at the Am Rothenbaum venue, in Hamburg, Germany. Seles stabbing This tournament would later attract infamy for being the location where then World No. 1 Monica Seles was stabbed during a singles quarterfinal match with then World No. 14 Magdalena Maleeva by an obsessed fan of Steffi Graf, Günter Parche. The stabbing prompted an increase in security at subsequent tennis events. Seles would not return to professional tennis until August 1995 following the incident, and never played in Germany again. WTA Tier II Tournaments
The WTA Tier II tournaments were Women's Tennis Association tennis second-level tournaments held from 1990 until the end of the 2008 season. The line-up of events varied over the years, with tournaments being promoted, demoted or cancelled. Jana Novotná
Jana Novotná (; 2 October 1968 – 19 November 2017) was a Czech professional tennis player. She played a serve and volley game, an increasingly rare style of play among women during her career. Novotná won the women's singles title at Wimbledon in 1998, and was runner-up in three other majors. Novotná also won 12 major women's doubles titles (completing a double career Grand Slam), four major mixed doubles titles, and three Olympic medals. The Hamburg European Open (formerly ''German Open Tennis Championships'') is an annual tennis tournament for professional players held in Hamburg, Germany and part of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour. Larisa Neiland
Larisa Savchenko-Neiland ( uk, Лариса Савченко-Нейланд, lv, Larisa Savčenko-Neilande; née Savchenko; also Larisa Neiland; born 21 July 1966) is a retired tennis player who represented the Soviet Union, Ukraine and Latvia. A lucky loser is a sports competitor (player or team) who loses a match in a knockout tournament or loses in qualifying, but who then enters the main draw, usually when another competitor withdraws during the tournament because of illness, injury, or other reasons. Beate Reinstadler (born 20 May 1967) is a former professional Austrian tennis player. Career Reinstadler played on the WTA Tour between 1986 and 1997. During that time she won two ITF titles, one in Ashkelon and one in Flensburg. Despite no standout performance in Grand Slam events, Reinstadler did reach the third round at the Australian Open in 1994 and at the French Open in 1995. Katerina Georgieva Maleeva ( bg, Катерина Георгиева Малеева; born 7 May 1969) is a former top 10 Bulgarian tennis player. She won eleven singles and two doubles WTA Tour titles. Her best position in the WTA rankings was No. 6 in 1990. Biography Born in Sofia, Maleeva is the second oldest of the three children of Georgi Maleev and Yuliya Berberyan. Her mother came from an Armenian family, which found refuge in Bulgaria after the 1896 Armenian massacres in the Ottoman Empire, and was the best Bulgarian tennis player in the 1960s. After she retired from professional tennis in the 1970s, Berberyan started a coaching career.
