1993 ACT Liberal Party Leadership Spill
The Canberra Liberals, the division of the Liberal Party of Australia in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), have held a number of leadership elections and deputy leadership elections. The most recent was in October 2024, with Leanne Castley currently serving as party leader. 1974 election The 1974 ACT Liberal Party leadership election was held on 30 October 1974. In 1966, Jim Leedman became president of the ACT Liberal Party's Canberra branch, and also served as the party's Electoral Conference president. He became president of the newly-formed Woden Valley branch later that year. Leedman led the Liberals at the 1967 election for the Australian Capital Territory Advisory Council. The Canberra Liberals, officially known as the Liberal Party of Australia (Australian Capital Territory Division), is the division of the Liberal Party of Australia in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). The party has been in opposition in the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly, ACT Legislative Assembly for much of its existence, but held power with the support of minor parties and independents between 1989 and 1991 and again between 1995 and 2001. It is currently the only state or territory division of either major party to be unrepresented in the Federal Parliament. Bill Stefaniak
William George Stefaniak (born 8 January 1952) is an Australian politician and former Australian Capital Territory Minister. He was the Leader of the Opposition in the Australian Capital Territory after succeeding in a leadership challenge against then-leader Brendan Smyth on 16 May 2006. He is a former Major in the Australian Army Reserve and a law graduate of the Australian National University. On 13 December 2007, he was replaced as Liberal Leader by Zed Seselja. Stefaniak contested the 2020 Australian Capital Territory General Election as leader of the Belco Party but was not elected. He was one of the five members for the district of Ginninderra from 1995 to 2008. Robyn Margaret Nolan is an Australian politician and was a member of the first multi-member single electorate Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly representing, initially, the Liberal Party. 1989 Australian Capital Territory Election
The 1989 Australian Capital Territory election was held on 4 March 1989 to elect the 1st Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly. This was the first direct election by voters in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) for their power legislative body. The Labor Party, led by Rosemary Follett, and the Liberal Party, led by Trevor Kaine, were the main challengers. Candidates were elected to fill seats using modified d'Hondt electoral system for a multi-member single (at-large) constituency. The result was a hung parliament. However, Labor, with the largest representation in the 17-member unicameral Assembly, formed Government with the support of various non-aligned minor parties. Gary Humphries
Gary John Joseph Humphries (born 6 July 1958) is a Deputy President of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. He was a member of the Australian Senate representing the Australian Capital Territory for the Liberal Party of Australia from 2003 to 2013. He was the Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory from 2000 to 2001; and was elected to the first parliament of the Australian Capital Territory, in 1989, later representing the Molonglo electorate until 2003.
