1991 Spanish Motorcycle Grand Prix
The 1991 Spanish motorcycle Grand Prix was the fourth round of the 1991 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season. It took place on the weekend of 10–12 May 1991 at the Jerez circuit. 500 cc race report Wayne Rainey’s 3rd pole in 4 races; takes turn 1 from Mick Doohan, John Kocinski, Eddie Lawson and Kevin Schwantz. Rainey and Doohan get a little gap to Kocinski, then it's a large gap to 4th. Doohan starts to open a gap from Rainey, who starts to get pressure from his teammate Kocinski. Kocinski passes Rainey without much finesse. Doohan wins with a large gap and Kocinski’s 2nd place takes 2 points from Rainey’s standing, so he's now 4 points behind Doohan. Circuito De Jerez
Circuito de Jerez – Ángel Nieto (formerly known as Circuit of Jerez and Circuito Permanente de Jerez), is a racing circuit located close to the city of Jerez de la Frontera, south of Seville and deep within the sherry-producing region in the south of Spain. The project was led by the Spanish engineer Manuel Medina Lara, based on a preliminary idea from Alessandro Rocci. Circuit history The circuit opened on 8 December 1985. During 1986 the circuit hosted the first international motorcycle event in Spain in March and the Formula One Spanish Grand Prix in April. The circuit's relatively remote location hindered significant spectator turnout, although up to 125,000 can be accommodated. Because of this, F1 moved to Barcelona following the 1991 race. Jean-Philippe Ruggia (born October 1, 1965 in Toulon) is a former Grand Prix motorcycle road racer from France. His best year was in 1995 when he finished in fifth place in the 250cc world championship. He won two races in 1993 riding for Aprilia and ended the season ranked sixth. He was also moderately successful in the 500cc class, finishing 8th overall in 1990. Juan Garriga
Joan Garriga Vilaresau (29 March 1963 – 27 August 2015) was a Spanish Grand Prix motorcycle road racer. He was known for his aggressive riding style. Together with Sito Pons, he helped to forge the path for Spanish riders in the World Championship’s premier class. Garriga had his best year in 1988, when he won three races and finished second in the 250cc world championship to Pons. In 1990, he moved up to the 500cc class but failed to repeat his successes in the 250 class. Kevin Schwantz
Kevin Schwantz (born June 19, 1964) is an American former professional motorcycle road racer. He was the world champion of the 1993 FIM Road Racing World Championship. Early life Schwantz, whose parents owned a motorcycle shop, learned to ride at the age of four. He began his competitive career as a trials rider, following his father and Uncle, Darryl Hurst (the original 34), in that sport. From trials, he progressed to motocross in his teens, becoming a top regional MX racer. After a serious crash in qualifying for the Houston Supercross in 1983, he decided to quit motocross. Career At the end of the 1984 season, he was offered a test ride with the Yoshimura Suzuki Superbike team, who promptly signed the Texan to a contract. Mick Doohan
Michael Sydney Doohan (born 4 June 1965) is an Australian former Grand Prix motorcycle road racing World Champion, who won five consecutive 500 cc World Championships. Biography Originally from the Gold Coast, Queensland, Doohan attended St Joseph's College, Gregory Terrace and Aspley State High School, Brisbane. He raced in Australian Superbikes in the late 1980s, and also won both races as Superbike World Championship visited Oran Park in as well as the second leg of the Japanese round held earlier in the year. 1991 Grand Prix Motorcycle Racing Season
The 1991 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season was the 43rd F.I.M. Road Racing World Championship season. Season summary The beginning of the 1990s marked a golden age for Grand Prix motorcycle racing. The rivalry between Wayne Rainey and Kevin Schwantz was in full flow while Mick Doohan started to come into his own. Eddie Lawson had switched to Cagiva and started to have some respectable results. In a one-year quirk, only 13 races counted as, competitors were allowed to drop their two worst scores. The Yugoslavia round was dropped because of the civil war and replaced with a Grand Prix of Europe at Jarama. The Brazilian round was also dropped at the last minute over track safety concerns and replaced with a race held at Le Mans. The inaugural Malaysian Grand Prix was held at Shah Alam. Louis Christen Racing
Louis Christen Racing (LCR) is a Swiss sidecar manufacturer named after founder Louis Christen. LCR sidecars have dominated sidecar road racing winning 30 World Sidecar Championships including every one of Steve Webster's 10 world championships. LCR started in 1971 building open wheel racing cars, Formula Vee, Formula Ford and Formula 3. In 1976 the first LCR sidecar was designed. From 1983 to 1989 they produced a series of successful monocoque frames for the 80 cc and 125 cc Grand Prix solo classes.
