1991 Reading Borough Council Election
The 1991 Reading Borough Council election was held on 2 May 1991, at the same time as other local elections across England and Wales. One third of Reading Borough Council's 45 seats were up for election. Since the previous election in 1990, the Conservative group on the council had split, with councillors Hamza Fuad and Pam Fuad forming their own independent group, the "Thames Conservatives", reducing the official Conservative numbers from 13 to 11. Neither of the Thames Conservatives' seats were in the third contested in 1991. The election saw the Labour party increase its majority on the council. 1991 United Kingdom Local Elections
Local elections were held in the United Kingdom in 1991. The results were a setback for the governing Conservative Party, who were left with their lowest number of councillors since 1973 - though their popular vote was an improvement from the 1990 local elections (John Major had succeeded Margaret Thatcher as prime minister in November 1990), and the Conservatives would go on to win the general election in 1992. Labour and the Liberal Democrats both benefited from the Conservative losses. The main opposition Labour Party gained 584 seats, bringing their number of councillors to 9,504 - their highest since 1975. Their projected share of the vote was 38%, a decline of 6% from the previous year. They overtook the Conservatives in number of councillors and would remain in that position until 2003. Reading Borough Council
Reading Borough Council is the local authority for the Borough of Reading in the English county of Berkshire. It is a unitary authority, having the powers of a non-metropolitan county and district council combined. Berkshire is purely a ceremonial county, with no administrative responsibilities. Rob Wilson
Robert Owen Biggs Wilson (born 4 January 1965) is an English politician and political author. He was elected Conservative Member of Parliament for the Reading East parliamentary constituency in the 2005 general election, being re-elected in the elections of 2010 and 2015, before being defeated in 2017. He became Minister for Civil Society in the Cabinet Office on 27 September 2014. Early life Wilson was born and brought up in south Oxfordshire. He attended Wallingford School and then, between 1984 and 1988, the University of Reading, where he studied history. He spent his final year at university as the President of the Reading University Students' Union. Wilson was a member of the Social Democratic Party. Reading Borough Council Elections
Reading Borough Council is the council for the unitary authority of Reading in Berkshire, England. Until 1 April 1998 it was a non-metropolitan district.
