The 1990–91 Division 1 season was won by Marseille, with 55 points, for the third year in a row. A total of 20 clubs competed in the league. Bordeaux, Brest and Nice were all administratively relegated to Division 2 due to financial difficulties at the end of the season despite all finishing above the relegation zone. Ligue 1 (; ), officially known as Ligue 1 McDonald's France, McDonald's for sponsorship reasons, is a professional association football league in France and the highest level of the French football league system. Administered by the Ligue de Football Professionnel, Ligue 1 is contested by 18 clubs and operates on a system of promotion and relegation from and to Ligue 2. Seasons run from August to May. Clubs play two matches against each of the other teams in the league – one home and one away – totalling to 34 matches over the course of the season.
