ASB Tennis Centre
The ASB Tennis Centre is a tennis facility located in the Parnell district of Auckland, New Zealand. The centre was opened on 18 November 1922 by the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association (now Tennis Auckland) on grounds leased from the Auckland City Council, that are a part of Pukekawa / Auckland Domain. Originally the centre had nine outdoor grass courts as well as a stand for 400 spectators. In 1977 the surface of the courts, 12 at the time, was changed to hardcourt. It currently hosts the ASB Classic for both men and women on consecutive weeks in January each year before the Australian Open. The centre is also a regular host of New Zealand Davis Cup team ties, including the 1975 and 1977 Eastern Zone finals. It is located on Stanley Street next to the Domain entrance. Hardcourt
A hardcourt (or hard court) is a surface or floor on which a sport is played, most usually in reference to tennis courts. It is typically made of rigid materials such as asphalt or concrete, and covered with acrylic resins to seal the surface and mark the playing lines, while providing some cushioning. Historically, hardwood surfaces were also in use in indoor settings, similar to an indoor basketball court, but these surfaces are rare now. Scott Davis (born August 27, 1962) is an American former professional tennis player. He reached a career high singles ranking of world No. 11 (in October 1985) and doubles ranking of world No. 2 (in January 1991). Tennis career A right-handed serve and volleyer, Davis played 14 years on the tour. He won three singles titles – the 1983 Maui, 1985 Tokyo Outdoor, and 1990 Auckland Grand Prix events – and 22 doubles titles. Kelly Jones (born March 31, 1964) is an American former doubles world No. 1 tennis player. Jones reached the finals in doubles at the Australian and US Opens in 1992. He is currently the Head Men's Tennis Coach at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. Biography Jones played varsity tennis at Pepperdine University from 1982 to 1985, where he won the NCAA Division 1 doubles title in 1984 and 1985. He was a member of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games U.S. tennis team. Jones joined the professional tour in 1986. He won his first top-level doubles title in 1987 at Auckland. Robert Van't Hof (born April 10, 1959) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. Early life Van't Hof was born in Lynwood, California. Education Van't Hof studied for three years at the University of Southern California, winning the National Collegiate Athletic Association singles title in 1980. He left the University without being awarded a degree, in order to pursue his tennis career. Van't Hof was inducted into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Hall of Fame in 2003. The 1990 IBM ATP Tour was the first season of the ATP Tour, the newly formed tennis circuit which came in to replace the Grand Prix and WCT tournaments. John Edward Barrett, (born 17 April 1931) is a former tennis player, television commentator and author. He was born in Mill Hill, North West London, the son of Alfred Edward Barrett, a leaf tobacco merchant, and Margaret Helen Barrett (née Walker). Andrei Eduardovich Chesnokov (russian: Андрей Эдуардович Чесноков, links=no; born 2 February 1966) is a former professional tennis player from Russia. Career Chesnokov's highest singles ranking was World No. 9 in 1991.
