1990 Classic (snooker)
The 1990 Mercantile Credit Classic was the eleventh edition of the professional snooker tournament which took place from 2–13 January 1990 with ITV coverage beginning on the 6th. The tournament was played at the Norbreck Castle Hotel, Blackpool, Lancashire. The semi-finals have been reduced to one session each of best of 11 frames and the final with two session with a best of 19 final. Steve James won his only ranking title beating Warren King of Australia 10–6 in a tournament of upsets which only 4 of the top 16 reaching their seeding places. Blackpool
Blackpool is a seaside town in Lancashire, England. It is located on the Irish Sea coast of the Fylde peninsula, approximately north of Liverpool and west of Preston, Lancashire, Preston. It is the main settlement in the Borough of Blackpool, borough of the same name. Steve Newbury
Steve Newbury (born 21 April 1956) is a former Welsh professional snooker player from Neath. Career Amateur career He started playing snooker in Neath. As an amateur, he reached the final of the Welsh Amateur Championship in 1978, where he was defeated in the final by Alwyn Lloyd. On his way to the final he defeated Terry Griffiths, a fateful win that encouraged Griffiths to turn professional as he could no longer qualify for the World Amateur Championship, and within 12 months Griffiths was the world professional champion having won as a qualifier. Newbury won the 1979 National Pairs Championship (with Cliff Wilson), and the 1980 Welsh Amateur Championship. Jim Wych
Jim Wych (born 11 January 1955 in Calgary) is a Canadian sports commentator and former professional snooker and pocket billiards player. He turned professional in 1979 and reached the quarter-final of the 1980 World Snooker Championship in his debut year, and reached the world championship quarter-final stage again in 1992. Wych also reached the quarter-finals of two other ranking tournaments, the 1986 British Open and the 1989 European Open. He reached the final of the men's doubles at the 1991 World Masters, playing with Brady Gollan. Dean Reynolds
Dean Reynolds (born 11 January 1963 in Grimsby) is an English former professional snooker player whose career spanned twenty years from 1981 to 2001. Early and personal life From Grimsby, Reynolds is a left-handed player and started playing snooker at the age of five years-old with his father 'Butch' who was a league standard club player. By the age of 12 years-old, Reynolds was displaying aptitude for the game, and in 1979 he won the Grimsby Boys Championships and the Lincolnshire and South Humberside Junior Championships. Colin Roscoe
Colin Roscoe (born 30 June 1945 in Connah's Quay, Flintshire) is a Welsh former professional snooker player. Career Born on 30 June 1945 in Connah's Quay, Flintshire, Roscoe won the Welsh Amateur Championship in 1981 and soon after turned professional. He reached his highest ranking of 39th for the 1984/1985 season, and progressed to the last 32 stage of ten ranking tournaments in the following eight years. Roscoe first made any notable progress at the 1982 International Open, where he defeated John Dunning and Doug French but lost 0–5 to Steve Davis in the last 32. Silvino Francisco
Silvino Francisco (3 May 1946 – 14 December 2024) was a South African professional snooker player who won the 1985 British Open. Snooker career Francisco came from a snooker-playing family. His brother Manuel and nephew Peter both played at a high level, Manuel having been a runner-up in the World Amateur Billiards Championship on several occasions, and Peter having risen to the world ranking of number 14. Francisco won the 1985 British Open, beating Kirk Stevens 12–9. Prior to the start of the Final match, Francisco accused Stevens of playing under the influence of drugs. Francisco was subsequently fined for the comments. The world governing body of snooker, the WPBSA, accepted that the accusation was false and it is on record that Kirk Stevens has never failed a drugs test in the history of his career. Jimmy White
James Warren White (born 2 May 1962) is an English professional snooker player who has won ten ranking events. Nicknamed "The Whirlwind" because of his swift and attacking style of play, White has reached six World Snooker Championship finals during his career but finished runner-up on each occasion. He has won two of snooker's Triple Crown (snooker), Triple Crown events, the 1984 Masters (snooker), 1984 Masters and the 1992 UK Championship. Bob Harris (snooker Player)
Bob Harris (born 12 March 1956) is an English former professional snooker player. Career Harris was expelled from school at the age of 15, and started playing snooker matches for money. In 1981, He made a championship record of 123 on his way to reaching the southern area final of the English Amateur Championship, finishing as runner-up after being defeated 9–13 by Vic Harris. He became a professional player in 1982. In the 1982–83 snooker season, Harris lost his first professional match, 4–5 to George Scott in the qualifying competition for the 1982 International Open. In his next tournament, the 1982 UK Championship, he defeated Graham Cripsey 9-6 and Mike Watterson 9–3 to reach the first round of the main competition, where he was eliminated 6–9 by Patsy Fagan. Eddie Charlton
Edward Francis Charlton (31 October 1929 – 7 November 2004) was an Australian professional snooker and billiards player. He remains the only player to have been world championship runner-up in both snooker and billiards without winning either title. He later became a successful marketer of sporting goods, launching a popular brand of billiard room equipment bearing his name. Early life Charlton was born in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia and came from a sporting family. His grandfather ran a billiards club in Swansea, New South Wales, and Charlton began playing cue sports when he was nine years old. Terry Griffiths
Terence Martin Griffiths (16October 19471December 2024) was a Welsh professional snooker player, coach and pundit. After winning several amateur titles, including the Welsh Amateur Championship (snooker), Welsh Amateur Championship in 1975 and back-to-back English Amateur Championships in 1977 and 1978, Griffiths turned professional in June 1978 at the age of 30. In his second professional tournament, he qualified for the 1979 World Snooker Championship. He reached the final of the event where he defeated Dennis Taylor by 24 to 16. David Roe
David Roe (born 11 September 1965) is a former English professional snooker player, and a four-time ranking tournament quarter-finalist. Career Roe was born on 11 September 1965 in Derby. He began his professional career for the 1986–87 snooker season after qualifying through the pro-ticket series. In his second professional season he reached the last 32 or better in four tournaments, and a year later he reached the last 16 of the 1989 World Snooker Championship on his debut in the main event, to reach the top 32 of the rankings. He then had two poorer seasons, before two quarter-finals in 1991/1992. A year later he reached the top 16, despite not reaching a quarter-final in that season. Jack McLaughlin
Jack McLaughlin (born 29 January 1959) is a Northern Irish former professional snooker and billiards player from Lurgan. McLaughlin is most notable for winning the 1988 Irish Professional Championship. Career McLaughlin turned professional in 1985 at the age of 26 after being Northern Ireland Amateur Champion in 1983 and 1984. McLaughlin's most notable moment came in the 1988 Irish Professional Championship in Antrim when he was the surprise winner of the tournament. After defeating Pascal Burke, Paul Watchorn and Joe O'Boye, he faced 1985 World Snooker Champion Dennis Taylor in the final.
