Elections to Strabane District Council were held on 17 May 1989 on the same day as the other Northern Irish local government elections. Strabane District Council
Strabane District Council (; Ulster Scots dialects, Ulster-Scots: ''Stràbane Destrìck Cooncil'') was a local council in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland established by the Local Government Act (Northern Ireland) 1972. It merged with Derry City Council on 1 April 2015 under local government reorganisation in Northern Ireland to become Derry and Strabane District Council. The headquarters of the council was in the town of Strabane. Apart from Strabane the other smaller towns in the area included Plumbridge, Newtownstewart, Donemana, Sion Mills and Castlederg. Also included in the Strabane District Council area were the following rural areas: Glenmornan, Evish, Glebe, County Tyrone, Glebe, Artigarvan, and Ballymagorry. The Strabane District Council area consisted of three electoral areas, Derg, Glenelly and Mourne, from which 16 members were elected. Local Government In Northern Ireland
Local government in Northern Ireland is divided among 11 single-tier districts known as 'Local Government Districts' (abbreviated LGDs) and formerly known as district council areas (DCAs). Councils in Northern Ireland do not carry out the same range of functions as those in the rest of the United Kingdom; for example they have no responsibility for education, road-building or housing (although they do nominate members to the advisory Northern Ireland Housing Council). 1989 Northern Ireland Local Elections
Elections for Local government in Northern Ireland, local government were held in Northern Ireland in 1989, with candidates contesting 565 seats. Background The elections took place after a turbulent period in Northern Irish politics. The signing of the Anglo-Irish Agreement (AIA) in November 1985 had been followed by widespread protests by those in the Unionist community. In November 1985, the 18 Unionist controlled District Councils voted for a policy of adjournment in protest against the AIA and in February 1986 also refused to set the 'rates' (local government taxes). In September 1986 Unionist councillors considered but rejected the option of mass resignations but decided to continue to use council chambers as a forum to protest the agreement. One new development on the Unionist side was the entry into Northern Ireland politics of the Conservatives in Northern Ireland, Conservative Party which was joined by three sitting Unionist councillors. Derg is one of the seven district electoral areas (DEA) in Derry and Strabane, Northern Ireland. The district elects five members to Derry and Strabane District Council and contains the wards of Castlederg, Finn, Glenderg, Newtownstewart and Sion Mills. Derek Hussey
Derek Robert Hussey (born 12 September 1948) is an Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) politician, serving as a Derry and Strabane Councillor for the Derg DEA since 2020, having previously served between 2014 and 2019. Hussey was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for West Tyrone from 1998 to 2007. Background Hussey was educated at Omagh Model School, Omagh Academy and Stranmillis College, Belfast. He was previously a teacher at Castlederg High School. He was elected to Strabane District Council in 1989 for the Derg District. In 2007, he was elected Chairman of the council. In the 1996 election to the Northern Ireland Peace Forum, Hussey was elected as representative for West Tyrone. In 1998, he was elected as MLA to the Northern Ireland Assembly, and re-elected in 2003.
