1989 NSL Cup
The 1989 NSL Cup was the 13th edition of the NSL Cup, which was the main national association football single-elimination tournament, knockout cup competition in Australia. APIA Leichhardt FC, APIA Leichhardt were the defending champions, having defeated South Melbourne FC, South Melbourne to win their first title in the previous year's 1988 NSL Cup final, final, but they were eliminated in the semi-finals by Sydney Olympic FC, Sydney Olympic. Adelaide City FC, Adelaide City defeated Sydney Olympic 2–0 in the 1989 NSL Cup final, final to win their second NSL Cup title. Teams The NSL Cup was a knockout competition with 14 teams taking part all trying to reach the Final in August 1989. The competition consisted of the 14 teams from the National Soccer League. Adelaide City FC
Adelaide City Football Club is a semi-professional soccer club based in Oakden, a north-eastern suburb of Adelaide. The club was a founding member of the now-defunct National Soccer League (NSL) and currently competes in the National Premier Leagues South Australia (NPL SA). The club was founded in 1946 by Adelaide's Italian community, who named the club Juventus. Adelaide City was one of 14 founding members of the National Soccer League in 1977 and competed concurrently in every edition of the competition before withdrawing a few weeks before the beginning of the league's final season. Peter Katholos
Peter Katholos (; born 18 March 1961) is an Australian former soccer player. He was a member of the Socceroos, Australia's national soccer team, throughout the 1980s during which time he made 22 international appearances (14 ' A-matches'), scoring two goals. He is best known for his time as a midfielder with Sydney Olympic and later Marconi in the Australian National Soccer League, although he also played for the Greek team Larissa at one stage. Katholos emigrated from Greece to Australia with his parents as a nine-year-old. Playing career Club career Katholos played for St George 35 times during the 1979 and 1980 National Soccer League seasons. Olympic Park Stadium (Melbourne)
Olympic Park Stadium was a multi-purpose outdoor stadium located on Olympic Boulevard in inner Melbourne, Australia. The stadium was built as an athletics training venue for the 1956 Olympics, a short distance from the Melbourne Cricket Ground, which served as the Olympic Stadium. Over the years it was the home of rugby league side, Melbourne Storm and the A-League team, Melbourne Victory; throughout its life the stadium played host to athletics. Olympic Park Stadium was located in Olympic Park, which is part of the Melbourne Sports and Entertainment Precinct. Joe Palatsides (born 7 July 1965) is a Greek Australian soccer manager and former player, who last served as the head coach of the Melbourne Victory FC Youth. Playing career A defender, Palatsides began his senior football career with Brunswick Juventus where he quickly became a first team regular, his best season coming in their relegation year where he played in every home-and-away game, scoring 11 goals. He signed with Footscray JUST in 1989, but they would also be relegated, and he eventually made the move to South Melbourne when the National Soccer League moved to the summer format.
