The 1988 Spanish Open was a women's tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts at the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona in Barcelona, Catalonia in Spain and was part of the Category 1 tier of the 1988 WTA Tour. It was the seventh edition of the tournament and was held from 25 April to 1 May 1988. Fifth-seeded Neige Dias won the singles title. Finals Singles Neige Dias defeated Bettina Fulco 6–3, 6–3 * It was Dias' only singles title of the year and the 2nd and last of her career. Clay Court
A clay court is one of the types of tennis court on which the sport of tennis, originally known as "lawn tennis", is played. Clay courts are made of crushed stone, brick, shale, or other unbound mineral aggregate depending on the tournament. The French Open uses clay courts, the only Grand Slam tournament to do so. Clay courts are more common in Continental Europe and Latin America than in North America, Asia-Pacific or Britain. Two main types exist: red clay, the more common variety, and green clay, also known as "rubico", which is a harder surface. Although less expensive to construct than other types of tennis courts, the maintenance costs of clay are high as the surface must be rolled to preserve flatness. Real Club De Tenis Barcelona
The Real Club de Tenis Barcelona - 1899 (meaning ''Royal Barcelona Tennis Club - 1899'') is a private tennis club in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The facility has 18 clay courts, including a stadium court with a capacity of 8,400 and show court for 2,000 spectators. Since moving to its current location in the northwest of the city in 1953, the club has hosted the Open Godó tournament, a part of the ATP World Tour's 500 Series. Neige Dias
Niege Dias (born 5 December 1966) is a former professional tennis player from Brazil. She also competed for the Brazil Fed Cup team from 1985 to 1988. In her career, she won two WTA Tour singles tournaments, the 1987 Brazil Open and 1988 Barcelona Open. Her best singles result at a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the third round of the 1988 French Open. Dias retired from professional tennis in 1989, at the age of 22. She married her former coach, Luiz Carlos Enck. Sandra Wasserman (born 10 March 1970) is a former professional tennis player from Antwerp, Belgium. Fed Cup Wasserman became Belgium's youngest Fed Cup player when she lost to Csilla Bartos of Hungary in October 1985 in Japan. She also lost the longest tie-break played by the Belgian Fed Cup team, losing 13–11 to Jennifer Capriati of the United States in 1990 in Atlanta, Georgia after losing the first set 6–0. 1988 WTA Tour
The 1988 WTA Tour was the elite tour for professional women's tennis of the Women's International Tennis Association (WITA) for the 1988 season. The 1988 WTA Tour included the four Grand Slam tournaments, the WITA Tour Championships and the WTA Category 1-5 events. ITF tournaments were not part of the WTA Tour, although they award points for the WTA World Ranking. The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) is the principal organizing body of women's professional tennis. Bettina Fulco
Bettina Fulco (born 23 October 1968) is a retired professional women's tennis player from Argentina. She reached her highest ranking of world No. 23 on 10 October 1988. Fulco began playing tennis at age ten, at the university club in her hometown of Mar del Plata, having been inspired to start because of the increased interest in the sport in Argentina due to Guillermo Vilas' success.
