The 1988 DFB-Pokal Final decided the winner of the 1987–88 DFB-Pokal, the 45th season of Germany's premier football cup. It was played on 28 May 1988 at the Olympiastadion in West Berlin. Schwarz-Weiß Essen
Schwarz-Weiß Essen is a German association football club based in Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia. The side has its origins in the gymnastics club ''Essener Turnerbund'' founded in 1881. A football department was formed in January 1900 and this became a separate entity within the club on 1 July 1974. History In 1933, the club joined the Gauliga Niederrhein, one of sixteen top flight divisions formed in the re-organization of German football under the Third Reich. They played at that level until being relegated in 1943, with their best results being a string of three consecutive second-place finishes between 1937 and 1940. SWE returned to tier I football in 1951 in the Oberliga West, and except for spending the 1958, 1959, and 1961 seasons in the second division, played in the top flight until the 1963 formation of the Bundesliga, Germany's first professional football league. Ralf Sievers
Ralf Sievers (born 30 October 1961) is a German former professional footballer who played as a midfielder, most notably with Eintracht Frankfurt. Career Like his brother Jörg he began his career at Lower Saxon club SV Eddelstorf. From 1982 until 1991, Sievers played 232 matches in the Bundesliga for Eintracht Frankfurt and FC St.Pauli, scoring ten goals. From 1991 until 1993 he appeared in 44 fixtures for St.Pauli (one goal) in the 2. Bundesliga. 1988 was his most successful season. With Frankfurt he won the 1987–88 DFB-Pokal on 28 May 1988 and was part of the German olympic team that won the bronze medal at the Summer Olympics in Seoul. The team captain of an association football team, sometimes known as the skipper, is a team member chosen to be the on-pitch leader of the team; they are often one of the older or more experienced members of the squad, or a player that can heavily influence a game or has good leadership qualities. Karl-Heinz "Charly" Körbel (born 1 December 1954) is a German former professional football defender. He is currently a member of Eintracht Frankfurt's directors of football and runs their football academy. Career Playing career Körbel is chiefly associated with spending his entire playing career at Eintracht Frankfurt from 1972 to 1991. He currently holds the record for most Bundesliga appearances at 602. He gained six caps for West Germany and played in ten B internationals. Manfred Binz
Manfred Binz (22 September 1965) is a German former professional footballer who played as a defender. He is the assistant manager of SC Hessen Dreieich. Club career Binz was born in Frankfurt. In his active career the sweeper won the DFB-Pokal with Eintracht Frankfurt. Having made his debut on 2 March 1985, he became the undisputed chief of the Frankfurt defence in the 1986–87 season and appeared in 246 Bundesliga games in a row. Although Frankfurt was always a championship contender at the beginning of the 1990s, Binz failed to win the Bundesliga with the ''eagles''. Finally the national cup victory was the highlight of his active career. After being eliminated in the UEFA cup in March 1994 he fell out with manager Klaus Toppmöller, causing the slow departure of the sweeper. Ulrich "Uli" Stein (born 23 October 1954) is a German former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Between 1978 and 1997, made 512 appearances in the German Bundesliga. He began his career in 1978 with Arminia Bielefeld. After two years, he moved to Hamburger SV where he played from 1980 to 1987. From 1987 to 1994 he played for Eintracht Frankfurt, but in 1994 he returned to Hamburger SV. One year later, he transferred to Arminia Bielefeld again. He retired during the 1996–97 season. Lajos László Détári (born 24 April 1963) is a Hungarian football manager and former player who played as a midfielder. At the height of his career (1984–1994), he was a well-respected player throughout Europe, winning "Player of the Year" titles in Hungary, Greece and Switzerland. Playing career Détári was born in Budapest. In 1984 he made his debut for the Hungarian national team against Switzerland. He scored 13 goals in 61 caps for his country until 1994.
