1988 Copa Interamericana
The 1988 Copa Interamericana was the 11th staging of Copa Interamericana, this competition. The final took place between Club Nacional de Football, Nacional (winners of the 1988 Copa Libertadores) and C.D. Olimpia (2inners of the 1988 CONCACAF Champions' Cup) and was staged over two legs on 5 and 29 March 1989. by Erik Francisco Lugo, Ian King and Osvaldo Gorgazzi on the RSSSF After the first leg in Tegucigalpa ended 1–1, Nacional easily defeated Olimpia 4–0 in Montevideo to win their second Copa Interamericana. Copa Interamericana
The Copa Interamericana ( en, Interamerican Cup) was an annual club football competition contested between a representative from North America (CONCACAF) and South America ( CONMEBOL). Established in 1969, it was discontinued in 1998 after CONCACAF clubs, particularly those from Mexico, began participating in CONMEBOL competitions. The competition was intended to be contested between the winners of the North American CONCACAF Champions Cup and the South American Copa Libertadores tournaments, although the participants varied at times. The competition was usually contested over a two legged tie, with a playoff or penalty kicks if necessary. However, it was common for several consecutive editions to go unheld. Hugo Eduardo de León Rodríguez (born 27 February 1958) is a Uruguayan football coach and former player, who played as a defender. Club career De León joined Nacional in 1977. With Nacional, he won two Uruguayan league titles, in 1977 and 1980, the Copa Libertadores in 1980. In 1981, he left Nacional to play for Gremio therefore missing the final game of the 1980 Intercontinental Cup which Nacional would subsequently win. With Gremio he won the Copa Libertadores and the Intercontinental Cup in 1983. After spells in Brazil and Spain he returned to Nacional in 1988, to win the Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup in that year, and the Copa Interamericana and Recopa Sudamericana in 1989.
