1985 Southern Conference Baseball Tournament
The 1985 Southern Conference Baseball Tournament was held in Boone, North Carolina from April 27 through April 29. The South Division's second seed won the tournament and earned the Southern Conference's automatic bid to the 1985 NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament. The tournament used a double-elimination format. Seeding The top two teams from each division based on regular season conference winning percentage participated in the tournament. The top seed from the North Division played the second seed from the South in the first round, and vice versa. The winners of the first round then played, while the losers played an elimination game. There were no ties in the standings, so no tiebreakers were necessary. A double-elimination tournament is a type of elimination tournament competition in which a participant ceases to be eligible to win the tournament's championship upon having lost ''two'' games or matches. Western Carolina Catamounts Baseball
The Western Carolina Catamounts are the intercollegiate athletics teams that represent Western Carolina University. The Catamounts compete in the NCAA Division I as members of the Southern Conference. Western Carolina fields 16 varsity sports teams. The men's and women's teams are called the Catamounts. Nickname The nickname Catamount derives from The nickname evolved from a contest that was held on campus in 1933. The school was called Western Carolina Teachers College at that time and its teams were known as "the Teachers". Everyone on campus was invited to participate, and the usual names were suggested: Bears, Indians, Panthers. However, the college wanted an unusual name; a name that few others had and that everyone would not copy. The Southern Conference baseball tournament is the conference championship tournament in baseball for the Southern Conference. The winner of the tournament receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division I baseball tournament. The event is scheduled for the Tuesday through Saturday before Memorial Day each year, five days prior to the NCAA Regionals. Tournament The Southern Conference Baseball Tournament is held annually. The 1985 NCAA Division I baseball tournament was played at the end of the 1985 NCAA Division I baseball season to determine the national champion of college baseball.
