1984–85 Biathlon World Cup
The 1984–85 Biathlon World Cup was a multi-race tournament over a season of biathlon, organised by the UIPMB ( Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne et Biathlon). The season started on 10 January 1985 in Minsk, Soviet Union, and ended on 9 March 1985 in Holmenkollen, Norway. It was the eighth season of the Biathlon World Cup. In Oberhof, the skating style of skiing made its introduction to biathlon. It was somewhat of a revolution as the skating style is quite a lot faster than the classic style. Some athletes did not adapt as quickly to the new style, and some nations, including West Germany and Norway, petitioned for a ban of the skating style. There was originally going to be held a relay in Holmenkollen, but the relay had to be cancelled due to fog. New scoring system The World Cup scoring system was changed before this season. Frank-Peter Roetsch
Frank-Peter Roetsch (born 19 April 1964) is a German former biathlete. He was the first biathlete to win a World Cup race using the skating technique when he won in Oberhof in 1985. Holmenkollen
Holmenkollen () is a mountain and a neighbourhood in the Vestre Aker borough of Oslo, Norway. It goes up to above sea level and is well known for its international skiing competitions. Etymology The name is a compound of the farm name and the finite form of . The name Holmen is itself a compound of the Old Norse words and . History and landmarks In addition to being a residential area, the area has been a ski recreation area since the late 19th century, with its famous ski jumping hill, the Holmenkollbakken, hosting competitions since 1892. To the north, the area borders the Marka woodlands area. The Holmenkoll Line of the Oslo Metro runs through the neighborhood, serving the stations Besserud and Holmenkollen. André Sehmisch
André Sehmisch (born 27 September 1964 in Breitenbrunn, Saxony, Steinheidel-Erlabrunn) is a former Germany, German biathlon, biathlete. Career In 1987 and 1989 he became world champion with the East German relay team. In 1986 he won the overall Biathlon World Cup, World Cup. After the German reunification, Sehmisch was passed over for many younger racers. In the 1992–93 season he finished second in the overall European Cup. Sehmisch retired after that season. Sergei Antonov (biathlete)
Sergei Antonov ( Bulgarian: Сергей Антонов) (11 July 1948 – 1 August 2007) was a Bulgarian airline representative accused of involvement in an assassination attempt against Pope John Paul II by Mehmet Ali Ağca in 1981. Antonov, who worked as a Rome-based representative for Balkan Airlines, Bulgaria's national airline, was arrested in 1981 by Italian authorities and charged with complicity after the assassination attempt against Pope John Paul II by Turkish national Ağca on May 13, 1981. Pope John Paul II was seriously wounded but survived the shooting. Antonov was placed on trial in Italy with three Turks and two other Bulgarians for the attack against the Pope. Ağca named Antonov as his co-conspirator before his conviction for attempted murder. The case against Antonov fell apart. Alfred Eder
Alfred Eder (born 28 December 1953) is an Austrian former biathlete. Life and career Eder was born in Piesendorf, and has been a soldier and thus competed as a member of the Heeressportverein (army sports club) Saalfelden. He competed in six Winter Olympics, and jointly holds the Austrian record for most Winter Olympic appearances along with Mario Stecher and Markus Prock. He is the father of biathlete Simon Eder and was a coach of the Austrian biathlon team. He received a life ban from the Austrian Olympic Committee in 2007, as one of 14 team officials who were implicated in doping activity at the 2006 Winter Olympics. Peter Angerer
Peter Angerer (born 14 July 1959) is a former West German biathlete. Career At the 1984 Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo he won the gold medal in the 20 km individual. In addition he won silver in the 10 km sprint and bronze with the West German relay team. Previously at the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid he won a relay bronze medal and at the 1988 Winter Olympic Games in Calgary the relay team won silver. In addition to winning five World Championship medals and 24 individual World Cup races, Angerer won the overall World Cup in 1983. Angerer won twice at the Holmenkollen ski festival biathlon competition with wins in the 20 km individual in 1984 and 1985. At the 1986 World Championships, Angerer finished second in the individual and came third with the relay team.
