The 1983 IAAF World Cross Country Championships was held in Gateshead, England, at the Riverside Park on March 20, 1983. Alison Wiley
Alison Wiley Rochon (born 11 October 1963) is a Canadian former long-distance runner. She was a World Cross Country runner-up in 1983. Wiley attended Stanford University and competed collegiately for the Stanford Cardinal track and field team. She was the 1982 winner of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championship title in the 3000 metres. She won seven NCAA All-American honours, which included a runner-up spot in the 1984 NCAA 5000 metres and three straight second-place finishes at the NCAA Women's Division I Cross Country Championship from 1982 to 1984. She was inducted into the Stanford Cardinal hall of fame in 2006. Internationally, her greatest success was at the 1983 IAAF World Cross Country Championships where she became Canada's first ever medallist at the competition, taking the silver medal behind Norway's Grete Waitz. Wodajo Bulti
Wodajo Bulti (born 11 March 1957) is a retired Ethiopian long-distance runner who specialized in the 5000 metres, 10000 metres and cross-country running. Career Wodajo was one of the most significant Ethiopian middle and long-distance runners in the 1980s. In his early years on the track he concentrated more on shorter distances such as 1500 metres because of great depth of Ethiopian talent over longer distances. He spent these years in the shadow of great Miruts Yifter, double Olympic Champion from Moscow and Mohamed Kedir, Olympic and World Cup medalist. His breakthrough came in 1982, at 25 years of age, when Wodajo finished at third place over 1500 m at the 1982 African Championships in Athletics in Cairo and followed it by the gold medal at 5000 metres. Eshetu Tura (; (born January 19, 1950) is a retired long-distance runner from Ethiopia. He won a bronze medal in 3,000 metres steeplechase at the 1980 Summer Olympics. Alberto Cova
Alberto Cova (born 1 December 1958) is a retired Italian long-distance track athlete, winner of the 10,000 m at the 1984 Summer Olympics and 1983 World Championships. Biography Born in Inverigo, province of Como, Italy, Alberto Cova was characterized by his superiority in the sprint finish, and the only way to nullify this was to set a very fast pace from the start to finish. Cova got his first fame at the 1982 European Championships in Athens, where he surprisingly outsprinted the main favourite Werner Schildhauer from East Germany, to win his first international championship title. In the next year, Cova wasn't the main favourite at the first World Championships held in Helsinki, being considered only as a possible medal winner. Pat Porter
Patrick ("Pat") Ralph Porter (May 31, 1959 – July 26, 2012) was an American distance runner. Born in Wadena, Minnesota, he graduated from Adams State in 1982 with a degree in marketing, after which he became one of the most dominant U.S. distance runners of the 1980s. Porter was a two time U.S. Olympian, running the 10000 meters at the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games. In 1983 he set the World Record for a road 10K at 27:31.8. He won the silver medal at the 1985 IAAF World Cup in Canberra, Australia, getting nipped at the tape by Ethiopia's Wodajo Bulti by six hundredths of a second. David Robert Clarke (born 1 January 1958) is a British former distance runner who competed over distances from the 1500 metres to the marathon.
