1983 Cardiff City Council Election
The 1983 Cardiff City Council election was held on Thursday 5 May 1983 to the district council known as Cardiff City Council, in Cardiff, South Glamorgan, Wales. It took place on the same day as other district council elections in Wales and England. The Welsh Conservative Party, Conservative Party regained control of the council from the Welsh Labour Party, Labour Party. The previous Cardiff City Council election took place 1979 Cardiff City Council election, in 1979 and the next full elections took place 1987 Cardiff City Council election, in 1987. Ward changes This was the first election to be affected by the changes resulting from ''The City of Cardiff (Electoral Arrangements) Order 1982''. Cardiff City Council
Cardiff City Council was the local government district authority that administered the city of Cardiff, capital of Wales, from 1974 until 1996. The district council replaced the Cardiff County Borough Council, pre-1974 county borough council. It was succeeded in 1996 by Cardiff Council. History Local government in England and Wales was reorganised following the Local Government Act 1972. The old administrative county of Glamorgan was subdivided, with Cardiff and the ''Vale'' between Cardiff and Bridgend forming South Glamorgan. South Glamorgan County Council came into existence on 1 April 1974. Heath (electoral Ward)
Heath ( Welsh: ''Y Mynydd Bychan'') is an electoral ward in the north of the city of Cardiff, Wales, which covers its namesake community, Heath. The ward elects three county councillors to the County Council of the City and County of Cardiff. Description and history The Heath ward boundaries are coterminous with the community. It is bordered to the north by Ty-wern Road ( Rhiwbina ward) and the Cardiff City Line ( Llanishen ward), to the east by the Cardiff to Caerphilly railway line (Cyncoed ward), to the south by the Western by-pass (Gabalfa ward) and to the west by the A470 road (Whitchurch & Tongwynlais ward). The Heath ward includes the University Hospital of Wales and the large adjacent area of greenery, Heath Park. According to the 2011 census the population of the Heath ward was 12,629. Rhiwbina
Rhiwbina (; , also ''Rhiwbina'') is a suburb and community in the north of Cardiff, the capital of Wales. Formerly a small hamlet within the parish of Whitchurch, Rhiwbina was developed throughout the twentieth century, and is now a separate ward. It retains aspects of its former character, however, and is given a Welsh village appearance by Beulah United Reformed Church (originally Capel Beulah) at the village crossroads. Modern Rhiwbina, which includes Rhiwbina Garden Village, Wenallt Hill, Rhiwbina Hill, Rhydwaedlyd and the Llanishen Fach and Pantmawr developments, is bordered by the suburbs of Whitchurch (Yr Eglwys Newydd) to the west, Llanishen to the east, and Birchgrove (Llwynbedw) to the south. Michael Roberts (politician)
Michael Hilary Arthur Roberts (6 May 1927 – 10 February 1983) was a British Conservative Party politician. Early life Roberts was born in Aberystwyth, and was educated at the Neath Grammar School for Boys and the University College of Wales, Cardiff. He was the first Headteacher of the Bishop of Llandaff Church in Wales High School when it opened in 1963, and was president of the Cardiff branch of the National Union of Teachers. Parliamentary career Roberts contested Aberdare in a 1954 by-election, placing third. He fought Cardiff South East in 1955 and 1959, being defeated both times by future Labour Prime Minister James Callaghan, on the second occasion by only 868 votes. He was Member of Parliament for Cardiff North from 1970 to February 1974, and thereafter for Cardiff North West. Plasnewydd
Plasnewydd (meaning ''New Manor'' or ''New Place'') is an electoral ward (and formerly the name of a community) of Cardiff, Wales. It falls within the parliamentary constituency of Cardiff East. It is bounded by the electoral wards of Cyncoed ( Roath Park) to the north; Penylan to the northeast; Adamsdown (main Newport Road) to the southwest; and Cathays (Cardiff to Caerphilly railway) to the west. It covers what is now the community of Roath. The ward population taken at the 2011 census was 18,166. History Plasnewydd takes its name from a 17th century house called "The New Place", originally a home of Edwards Richard and, in 1890, given to the local people. Gabalfa (, ) is a district and community in the north of the city of Cardiff, capital of Wales. It is characterised by a four-lane flyover road at the Gabalfa Interchange, where the A48 road meets the A470 road (North Road) which leads from Cardiff to northern Wales, and the A469 road (Caerphilly Road). The name is derived from the Welsh , literally translated as 'place of the boat'. It was formerly the site of a ferry crossing across the River Taff, upon which a school is now built. The area was first heavily developed in the 1880s, with most of the characteristic terraced housing originating from the next 30 years of construction. Trowbridge is a district, Community (Wales), community and coterminous electoral ward on the eastern edge of the city of Cardiff, capital of Wales. The community and electoral ward includes some or all of the areas of the St Mellons estate and Trowbridge, as well as part of the Wentlooge Levels between the mainline railway and the coast. Pentwyn is an electoral ward in the northeast of Cardiff, capital city of Wales. It covers the communities of Pentwyn and Llanedeyrn (which was created from the southern part of Pentwyn in 2016). The ward has elected councillors to the post-1996 Cardiff Council and the pre-1996 Cardiff City Council. Description The Pentwyn ward is bordered to the north by the Pontprennau & Old St Mellons, to the west by Cyncoed and to the south by the Penylan ward.
