1982–83 Biathlon World Cup
The 1982–83 Biathlon World Cup was a multi-race tournament over a season of biathlon, organised by the UIPMB ( Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne et Biathlon). The season started on 27 January 1983 in Ruhpolding, West Germany, and ended on 11 March 1983 in Holmenkollen, Norway. It was the sixth season of the Biathlon World Cup, and the first in which women were allowed to compete in their own European Cup. Though called the European Cup, participation was not restricted to Europeans. The second World Cup round was originally going to be held in Oberhof, East Germany, but they had to cancel due to a lack of snow. The races were therefore moved to Antholz-Anterselva, Italy. Originally the first round of the European Cup was to be held in Jáchymov, Czechoslovakia from 21 to 24 January 1983, but it was cancelled, thus the races in Lappeenranta, Finland were the only ones held. Peter Angerer
Peter Angerer (born 14 July 1959) is a former West German biathlete. Career At the 1984 Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo he won the gold medal in the 20 km individual. In addition he won silver in the 10 km sprint and bronze with the West German relay team. Previously at the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid he won a relay bronze medal and at the 1988 Winter Olympic Games in Calgary the relay team won silver. In addition to winning five World Championship medals and 24 individual World Cup races, Angerer won the overall World Cup in 1983. Angerer won twice at the Holmenkollen ski festival biathlon competition with wins in the 20 km individual in 1984 and 1985. At the 1986 World Championships, Angerer finished second in the individual and came third with the relay team. Johann Passler
Johann Passler (born 18 August 1961) is a former Italian biathlete. At the 1988 Olympics in Calgary, Passler won bronze medals in the 20 km and in the relay. Holmenkollen
Holmenkollen () is a mountain and a neighbourhood in the Vestre Aker borough of Oslo, Norway. It goes up to above sea level and is well-known for its international skiing competitions. Overview In addition to being a residential area, the area has been a ski recreation area since the late 19th century, with its famous ski jumping hill, the Holmenkollbakken, hosting competitions since 1892. Dmitry Vasilyev (biathlete)
Dmitry Vladimirovich Vasilyev (russian: Дмитрий Владимирович Васильев) (born 8 December 1962 in Leningrad) is a former Soviet biathlete. At the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Vasilyev won a gold medal with the Soviet relay team, which consisted of himself, Juri Kashkarov, Algimantas Šalna and Sergei Bulygin. He received another gold medal at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. Vasilyev also won a 20 km individual World Cup race in Holmenkollen in the 1982–83 season. Fritz Fischer (biathlete)
Friedrich "Fritz" Fischer (born 22 September 1956) is a former biathlete from Germany. He won a gold medal with Germany in the 4 × 7.5 km relay in the 1992 Winter Olympics. After ending his competitive career Fischer served as a coach for the German biathlon team for many years before retiring in 2014. Alfred Eder
Alfred Eder (born 28 December 1953) is an Austrian former biathlete. Life and career Eder was born in Piesendorf, and has been a soldier and thus competed as a member of the Heeressportverein (army sports club) Saalfelden. He competed in six Winter Olympics, and jointly holds the Austrian record for most Winter Olympic appearances along with Mario Stecher and Markus Prock. He is the father of biathlete Simon Eder and was a coach of the Austrian biathlon team. He received a life ban from the Austrian Olympic Committee in 2007 as one of 14 team officials who were implicated in doping activity at the 2006 Winter Olympics. The bans on Eder and 11 others were subsequently rescinded in 2009, after the Fédération Internationale de Ski dropped doping charges against Eder, biathlon director for the Austrian ski federation Markus Gandler and cross-country ski coach Gerald Heigl. Algimantas Šalna
Algimantas Šalna (also transliterated Shalna, born 12 September 1959) is a former Lithuanian, Soviet biathlete. Šalna won gold medals during the World Championships as a relayist in 1983 and 1985. As a member of the Soviet relay team, he won a gold medal at the 1984 Winter Olympics – he was the first Lithuanian-born athlete to win a medal in the Winter Olympics. As an individual he placed fifth in its 10 km competition. He moved to the U.S. in 1991 and coached the U.S. Olympic biathlon teams of 1994, 1998, 2002, and 2006. Odd Lirhus
Odd Lirhus (born 18 September 1956) is a former Norwegian biathlete. At the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo he won a silver medal in the relay. He also won a gold medal in the 20 km individual at the 1978 Biathlon World Championship. In addition, he won the 20 km individual in Falun in the 1983–84 season. After that season, Lirhus took a gap year as an active biathlete to be a coach for the Canadian biathlon team, intending to return to biathlon and compete at the World Championships in Holmenkollen. He did not, however, return. From 2002 to 2005, Lirhus was the head coach for Norwegian women's biathlon team. Eirik Kvalfoss
Eirik Kvalfoss (born 25 December 1959) is a Norwegian retired biathlete. Life and career He won three medals during the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo: gold in the 10 km sprint, silver in relay and bronze in the 20 km individual. In total Kvalfoss won 11 individual Olympic and World Championship medals between 1982–1991, as well as several relay medals. He was awarded ''Morgenbladets Gullmedalje'' in 1983.
