1982 College Softball Season
The 1982 college softball season, play of college softball in the United States began in February 1982. Two organizations sponsored end of season tournaments crowning a national champion: the AIAW and the NCAA. Both ended in an event called the Women's College World Series. The season progressed through the regular season, many conference tournaments and championship series, and concluded with the dueling tournaments in May 1982. 1982 was the final season of AIAW sports, and the first of NCAA-sanctioned women's sports. The AIAW title was claimed by while the NCAA event crowned UCLA as champion. Following the season, the NCAA became the sole sponsor of top-level women's college athletics, as the AIAW folded. 1982 UCLA Bruins Softball Team
The 1982 UCLA Bruins softball team represented the University of California, Los Angeles in the 1982 college softball season. The Bruins were coached by Sharron Backus, who led her eighth season. The Bruins played their home games at Sunset Field and finished with a record of 33–7–2. They competed in the Western Collegiate Athletic Association, where they finished second with a 15–4–1 record. The Bruins were invited to the 1982 NCAA Division I softball tournament, where they swept the Central Regional and then completed an undefeated run through the Women's College World Series to claim the first NCAA Women's College World Series Championship. The Cal State Fullerton Titans softball team represents California State University, Fullerton in NCAA Division I college softball. Nebraska Cornhuskers Softball
The Nebraska Cornhuskers softball team represents the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in the Big Ten Conference of NCAA Division I. The program was founded in 1976 as a club sport and became an officially sanctioned varsity sport the next year. NU plays its home games at Bowlin Stadium, constructed in 2001 as part of the Haymarket Park complex. In baseball statistics, a hit (denoted by H), also called a base hit, is credited to a batter when the batter safely reaches or passes first base after hitting the ball into fair territory with neither the benefit of an error nor a fielder's choice. Scoring a hit To achieve a hit, the batter must reach first base before any fielder can either tag him with the ball, throw to another player protecting the base before the batter reaches it, or tag first base while carrying the ball. NCAA Division I (D-I) is the highest level of intercollegiate athletics sanctioned by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the United States, which accepts players globally. Strikeout
In baseball or softball, a strikeout (or strike-out) occurs when a batter accumulates three strikes during a time at bat. It usually means that the batter is out. A strikeout is a statistic recorded for both pitchers and batters, and is denoted by K in scorekeeping and statistics. A "strikeout looking" — in which the batter does not swing and the third strike is called by the umpire — is usually denoted by a ꓘ. Western Michigan Broncos Softball
The Western Michigan Broncos are a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I program representing Western Michigan University (WMU) in college athletics. They compete in the Mid-American Conference in men's baseball, basketball, football (within the Football Bowl Subdivision), soccer and tennis; and women's basketball, cross-country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, track and field, and volleyball. Innings Pitched
In baseball, innings pitched (IP) are the number of innings a pitcher has completed, measured by the number of batters and baserunners that are put out while the pitcher is on the pitching mound in a game. Three outs made is equal to one inning pitched. One out counts as one-third of an inning, and two outs counts as two-thirds of an inning. Sometimes, the statistic is written 34.1, 72.2, or 91.0, for example, to represent innings, innings, and 91 innings exactly, respectively. Runners left on base by a pitcher are not counted in determining innings pitched. It is possible for a pitcher to enter a game, give up several hits and possibly even several runs, and be removed before achieving any outs, thereby recording a total of zero innings pitched. Earned Run
In baseball, an earned run is any run that was fully enabled by the offensive team's production in the face of competent play from the defensive team. Conversely, an unearned run is a run that would not have been scored without the aid of an error or a passed ball committed by the defense. An unearned run counts just as much as any other run for the purpose of determining the score of the game. However, it is "unearned" in that it was, in a sense, "given away" by the defensive team. Both total runs and earned runs are tabulated as part of a pitcher's statistics. However, earned runs are specially denoted because of their use in calculating a pitcher's earned run average (ERA), the number of earned runs allowed by the pitcher per nine innings pitched (i.e., averaged over a regulation game). In baseball statistics, earned run average (ERA) is the average of earned runs allowed by a pitcher per nine innings pitched (i.e. the traditional length of a game).
