1981 FA Charity Shield
The 1981 FA Charity Shield was the 59th FA Community Shield, FA Charity Shield, an annual association football, football match played between the winners of the previous season's The Football League, Football League and FA Cup competitions. The match was played on 22 August 1981 at Wembley Stadium (1923), Wembley Stadium and played between 1980–81 Football League champions Aston Villa F.C., Aston Villa and 1980–81 FA Cup, FA Cup winners Tottenham Hotspur F.C., Tottenham Hotspur. The match ended in a 2–2 draw and the sides shared the trophy for six months each. Peter Withe scored twice for Villa, and Mark Falco twice for Tottenham, in front of a 92,500-strong crowd. Colin Gibson (footballer, Born 1960)
Colin John Gibson (born 6 April 1960) is an English former footballer. He was an attacking left back who could also play in midfield. In a 17-year career, he scored 34 goals in 448 league and cup appearances and also won caps for the England under-21 and England B teams. Gibson started his career at Aston Villa in 1978 and made around 200 appearances for the club in seven years, as well as winning the First Division title, the European Cup and the European Super Cup. He moved on to Manchester United in 1985, and during his five years at United he played 79 league games. He signed with Leicester City in 1990, after a short loan at Port Vale. After four years with the "Foxes" in which he helped the club to win promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs in 1994, he transferred to Blackpool, before finishing his career by winning promotion out of the Third Division with Walsall in 1995. Nigel Spink
Nigel Philip Spink (born 8 August 1958) is an English football coach and former professional footballer. He played as a goalkeeper from 1976 until 2001. He made his name at Aston Villa and also made one appearance for England at international level on the tour of Australia in 1983. He also played in the Football League for West Bromwich Albion and Millwall, and at non-league level for Chelmsford City and Forest Green Rovers, the latter he would go on to manage between 2000 and 2002. Spink later worked as a goalkeeping coach for Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic, Sunderland and Bristol City. Brendon Ormsby
Brendon Thomas Christopher Ormsby (born 1 October 1960) is an English former professional footballer who played as a centre back for Aston Villa, Leeds United, Shrewsbury, Doncaster, Waterford United, Scarborough and Wigan. Ormsby was a product of the Aston Villa Academy and spent most of his professional career at the club. Ormsby led Leeds to the FA Cup semi-final and Division Two play-offs in 1986–87. He worked as a postman in Leeds Moortown after retiring from football. During his later years he has worked as a coach at Senior and Junior levels, including a spell working with Lawnswood Lasers JFC. Ormsby is also the honorary president of the Scarborough Branch of the Leeds United Member's Club. Robert Hopkins (footballer)
Robert Arthur Hopkins (born 25 October 1961) is an English former professional footballer who played as a winger. Hopkins was born in the Hall Green district of Birmingham, and started his playing career at Aston Villa, with whom he won the FA Youth Cup in 1980. He played in more than 300 Football League matches for Aston Villa, Birmingham City (in two spells), Manchester City, West Bromwich Albion, Shrewsbury Town and Colchester United. He also played in Hong Kong for Instant-Dict and for non-League clubs Solihull Borough and Bromsgrove Rovers. While at Birmingham, the club he has supported since childhood, he helped the club to win promotion to the First Division in 1985 and the Associate Members' Cup in 1991. Andy Blair (footballer)
Andrew Blair (born 18 December 1959) is a former footballer who was born in Scotland but grew up in England and spent his career in English football. He played in the Aston Villa team that beat Barcelona 3–0 at Villa Park to win the 1982 European Super Cup. Football career Born in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Blair grew up in Bedworth, Warwickshire, and was educated at Nicholas Chamberlaine School in the town. Tony Morley
William Anthony Morley (born 26 August 1954) is an English former footballer who played as a winger. He played in the Football League for Preston North End, Burnley, Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion and Birmingham City, as well as playing for other teams abroad. He also won six caps for England. Morley is now a regular on the 'Villa Old Stars' circuit. He also provides co-commentary for radio broadcasts on Aston Villa's website. Club career Morley was born in Ormskirk, and represented Ormskirk and District Schools. He signed as an apprentice with Preston North End in July 1969, before turning professional in August 1972. Gordon Cowans
Gordon Sidney Cowans (born 27 October 1958) is an English retired football player and coach. Cowans started his career at Aston Villa as an apprentice in 1974, and signed as a professional in 1976. During his time at Aston Villa, he won the League Cup, the League Championship, the European Cup and the European Super Cup. Cowans left Aston Villa for the first time in 1985, signing for Bari. He then returned to Aston Villa in 1988 and left again in 1991 moving to Blackburn Rovers. When he left Blackburn he went back to Aston Villa, before moving to Derby County, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Sheffield United, Bradford City, Stockport County and finally Burnley. David Geddis
David Geddis (born 12 March 1958) is a football coach and scout, a former professional football player and England Youth and B international. As a player, he scored 77 goals from 264 appearances in the Football League. Biography Playing career When Ipswich Town's leading goal scorer, Trevor Whymark, was injured against Norwich City on Boxing Day 1977, Geddis replaced him in the line-up and remained in the side. This enabled Geddis to become one of the youngest players ever to make an appearance in the FA Cup final, as Ipswich progressed through the competition to Wembley, where they beat Arsenal. Des Bremner
Desmond George Bremner (born 7 September 1952) is a Scottish former professional football midfielder. He made more than 600 league appearances for clubs in both Scotland and England, was a member of Aston Villa's European Cup-winning team of 1982, and was capped for the Scotland national team. Career Born in Aberchirder, Banffshire, Bremner began his football career with Banff-based Highland League club Deveronvale before joining Hibernian in 1971, turning professional in November 1972. He made his only appearance for Scotland while with Hibs in March 1976, coming on as a substitute for Kenny Dalglish in the game against Switzerland.
