1980 Vuelta A España
The 35th Edition ''Vuelta a España'' (Tour of Spain), a long-distance bicycle stage race and one of the three grand tours, was held from 22 April to 11 May 1980. It consisted of 20 stages covering a total of , and was won by Faustino Rupérez of the Zor cycling team. Roberto Visentini won the prologue of the race and kept the leader's jersey for the first five days of the race. Sean Kelly finished second in the prologue and won the next two stages but did not get to wear the leader's jersey. On the first mountain stage, Faustino Rupérez came solo to the finish and took the leader's jersey which he kept until the end of the race. Pedro Torres put in an attack on the penultimate stage on the climb to Puerto de la Morcuera. However Rupérez together with Miguel Mari Lasa bridged up to Torres halfway to Alto de Cotos and the leader's jersey was safe. Rupérez won the race ahead of Torres and Claude Criquielion. Faustino Rupérez
Faustino Rupérez Rincón (born 29 July 1956) is a Spanish former professional road racing cyclist who raced between 1979 and 1985. Ruperez is most famous for capturing the overall title at the 1980 Vuelta a España. He finished 4th in the 1979 Vuelta a España, won the 1981 Volta a Catalunya and finished 2nd overall at the 1984 Tour of the Basque Country behind Sean Kelly. Since retiring from competitive cycling, Rupérez has served as a directeur sportif for the Spain national team. Burgos () is a city in Spain located in the autonomous community of Castile and León. It is the capital and most populous municipality of the province of Burgos. Logroño ( , , ) is the capital of the autonomous community of La Rioja (Spain), La Rioja, Spain. The Monastery of San Salvador of Leyre (; ) is a religious complex to the south of the Sierra de Leyre, in northern Navarre, Spain, representing one of the most important historical monasteries of Spain. History The oldest records of the site date from 842, when Íñigo Arista, considered the first king of Pamplona, and Wilesindo, Bishop of Pamplona, made a donation to the monastery. Klaus-Peter Thaler (born 14 May 1949 in Eckmannshausen, North Rhine-Westphalia) is a former professional cyclist whose career spanned from 1976 to 1988, he was successful in road-racing and cyclo-cross. He was world cyclo-cross champion twice as an amateur and twice as a professional and German champion eight times. Biography Thaler studied at the University of Siegen and received a post-graduate degree as a middle school teacher for physical education and geography. From 1974-76 he attended the German Coaching Academy in Cologne, writing his diploma thesis under the guidance of Arnd Krüger. In 1976, Thaler entered the Olympic Games, in the road race. He finished in ninth place. He turned professional one year later. In the 1978 Tour de France, Thaler led the race for two days, after his team won the team time trial.
