1980 NSL Cup
The 1980 NSL Cup was the fourth edition of the NSL Cup, which was the main national association football knockout cup competition in Australia. Adelaide City were the defending champions, having defeated St George-Budapest to win their first title in the previous year's final, but they were eliminated in the semi-finals by finalist Heidelberg United. Marconi Fairfield defeated Heidelberg United 3–0 via a replay after a 0–0 draw in the final to win their first NSL Cup title. Teams The NSL Cup was a knockout competition with 32 teams taking part all trying to reach the Final in October 1980. The competition consisted of the 14 teams from the National Soccer League plus 18 teams from their respective top division state leagues. Marconi Stallions Football Club is an Australian semi-professional association football club based in Fairfield, New South Wales, Fairfield, Sydney, New South Wales. The club has been crowned Australian champion four times. The Stallions are the soccer team of Club Marconi, a social and sporting club founded in 1956 by Italian immigrants who settled in Sydney's western suburbs. It earned promotion to the top tier of soccer in New South Wales and established itself as one of the strongest clubs in Sydney during the 1970s, before becoming a founding member of the National Soccer League in 1977. Southern Football Club is a football club from Kingston, Tasmania, Australia. They compete in the Southern Championship of the Football Federation Tasmania. The club was formed in 2009 by the merger of two existing clubs, Kingston Cannons and Christian United. History Rapid FC Rapid FC was founded in 1958. Rapid was highly successful during its life winning the State Championship 4 times, and the Southern Premiership 5 times. Canberra City Football Club, also known for some time as the Canberra Arrows, is a semi-professional association football, soccer club based in Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). It currently participates in the Capital Footballs Division One competition and competed in the National Soccer League from 1977 to 1986. Edgeworth Football Club is an Australian semi-professional football club based in the suburb of Edgeworth, near Newcastle, New South Wales. The club currently competes in the National Premier Leagues Northern NSW. History The suburb of Edgeworth was known as Young Wallsend until 1960. The first recorded football match involving a Young Wallsend team took place on 14 May 1892, when Minmi Rangers defeated Young Wallsend 3–0 at the Young Wallsend ground. For most of the 20th century a lower-league club, Edgeworth won promotion into the Northern New South Wales 1st Division in 1973. Edgeworth made the 1st Division grand final in 1977, only to be defeated 1-0 by Weston. Newcastle KB United
Newcastle KB United are a defunct Australian association football club. They participated in the National Soccer League from 1978 until early in the 1984 season. History The first Newcastle based team to play in a national league, Newcastle KB United was formed in 1977, but did not play until 1978 one year after the inception of the National Soccer League (Australia), Philips Soccer League (NSL). Newcastle KB United was sponsored by Tooth and Co., Tooths Breweries operating the Kent Brewery (hence the KB tag) and took the NSL by storm by setting new crowd attendance records on a regular basis.
