World Boxing Association
The World Boxing Association (WBA), formerly known as the National Boxing Association (NBA), is an international professional boxing organization based in Panama. The WBA awards its world championship title at the professional level. Founded in the United States in 1921 by 13 state representatives as the NBA, it is the oldest major organization regulating fights. In 1962, it changed its name in recognition of boxing's growing popularity around the world and began to admit other nations as members. Kronk Gym
Kronk Gym is a boxing gym located in Detroit, once led by trainer Emanuel Steward. It was originally run out of the basement of the oldest recreation center of the City of Detroit. The gym became a household name in the sport of boxing and its gold shorts a magnet to young talent following the enormous success and high profile of multiple World Champion and Boxing Hall of Famer Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns in the 1980s. Named after Detroit City Councilman John Kronk, the training facility opened in 1921. The original site closed in 2006, but it reopened in 2015. Thomas Hearns
Thomas Hearns (born October 18, 1958) is an American former professional boxer who competed from 1977 to 2006. Nicknamed the "Detroit, Motor City Cobra", and more famously "the Hitman", Hearns's tall, slender build and long arms and shoulders allowed him to move up over in his career and become the first boxer in history to quintuple champion, win world titles in five weight divisions: welterweight, light middleweight, middleweight, super middleweight and light heavyweight. 1980 Michigan Wolverines Football Team
The 1980 Michigan Wolverines football team was an American football team that represented the University of Michigan in the 1980 Big Ten Conference football season. In their 12th season under head coach Bo Schembechler, the Wolverines compiled a 10–2 record (8–0 against conference opponents), won the Big Ten Conference championship, defeated Washington in the 1981 Rose Bowl, and outscored all opponents by a total of 322 to 129. The Rose Bowl victory was Schembechler's first in a bowl game, following seven bowl games losses. After falling out of the rankings for four weeks, the 1980 Wolverines ended up being ranked No. 4 in both the AP and UPI polls. Albert William Kaline ( ; December 19, 1934 – April 6, 2020), nicknamed "Mr. Tiger", was an American professional baseball right fielder who played 22 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Detroit Tigers. For most of his career, Kaline played in the outfield, mainly as a right fielder where he won ten Gold Glove Awards and was known for his strong throwing arm. Billy Ray Sims (born September 18, 1955) is an American former professional football player who was a running back for five seasons with the Detroit Lions of the National Football League (NFL) from 1980 to 1984. Sims played college football for the Oklahoma Sooners, earning consensus All-American honors twice, and winning the Heisman Trophy in 1978. He was selected by the Lions with first overall pick of the 1980 NFL draft. After three Pro Bowl selections, his career was prematurely ended by a knee injury suffered in 1984.
