1979 WTA Tour
The 1979 WTA Tour consisted of a number of tennis tournaments for female tennis players. It was composed of the newly streamlined version of the Avon Championships (which was now an 11-week tour of the US) and the Colgate Series. The year 1979 also saw the creation of the first official ranking system and these rankings were used to determine acceptance into the tournaments. Borg–McEnroe Rivalry
The Borg–McEnroe rivalry was a tennis rivalry between Björn Borg and John McEnroe, who met 14 times on the regular tour and 22 times in total between November 1978 and April 1981. Their head-to-head was even at 7-7. Their on-court rivalry was highlighted by their contrasting temperaments and playing styles: the Swede Borg was known for his cool and emotionless demeanor on court, while the American McEnroe was famed for his court-side tantrums. Because of this, their rivalry was described as "Fire and Ice". Mimmi Wikstedt
Marie "Mimmi" Wikstedt (born 30 April 1954) is a former professional tennis player from Sweden. Biography Wikstedt, who is known by her nickname "Mimmi", was born in Stockholm. She began competing in the early 1970s and made her debut for the Sweden Fed Cup team in 1973. Most of her Fed Cup matches came in doubles. Her best grand slam performances came on the grass courts at Wimbledon. She made the mixed doubles quarter-finals with Ernie Ewert in 1975, won the Wimbledon Plate in 1976, reached the women's doubles quarter-finals with Jane Stratton in 1977 and made the third round of the singles in 1979. At the 1979 Australian Open she was quarter-finalist in the women's doubles partnering Renata Tomanova. From the late 1970s she competed on the WTA Tour, most prominently as a doubles player. Chris O'Neil (tennis)
Christine O'Neil (born 19 March 1956) is an Australian former professional tennis player. O'Neil is best known for her singles victory at the 1978 Australian Open, and was the last Australian to win the title until Ashleigh Barty in 2022. She also became the first unseeded woman to win the title in the Open era. O'Neil is also one of the few players who have won both the Australian Open junior (1973) and senior (1978) titles. Robert Anthony John Hewitt (born 12 January 1940) is a former professional tennis player from Australia. In 1967, after marrying a South African, he became a South African citizen. He has won 15 major titles and a career Grand Slam in both men's and mixed doubles. In 2015, he was convicted of rape and sexual assault of girls he was coaching in the 1980s and 1990s; Hewitt was sentenced to six years in jail, and was subsequently expelled from the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Heinz Peter Günthardt (born 8 February 1959) is a retired tennis player from Switzerland. Tennis player career Günthardt won five singles titles during his professional career, including the Rotterdam WCT in 1980. The right-hander reached his career-high ATP singles ranking of world No. 22 in April 1986. In doubles, he captured a total number of 30 titles. Günthardt won the men's doubles at the 1981 Roland Garros and the 1985 Wimbledon Championships with Balázs Taróczy, and the mixed doubles at the 1985 US Open with Martina Navratilova.
