1979 Houston Oilers
The 1979 Houston Oilers season was the franchise's 20th overall and the tenth in the National Football League. The franchise scored 362 points while the defense gave up 331 points. Their record of 11 wins and 5 losses resulted in a second-place finish in the AFC Central Division. The Oilers appeared once on Monday Night Football on December 10, 1979 where the sports promotion Luv ya Blue was launched and returned to the AFC Championship Game for the second consecutive year. Earl Campbell would lead the NFL in rushing for the second consecutive year and set a franchise record for most touchdowns in a season with 19. The Oilers would make the playoffs again as a wild card. Bum Phillips
Oail Andrew "Bum" Phillips Jr. (September 29, 1923 – October 18, 2013) was an American football coach at the high school, college and professional levels. He served as head coach in the National Football League (NFL) for the Houston Oilers from 1975 to 1980 and the New Orleans Saints from 1981 to 1985. Early football career Phillips played football at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, but enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on September 30, 1942. He became one of the elite Marine Raiders. After he returned from the war, Phillips completed the remaining year on his degree at Lamar (a junior college at the time), and enrolled at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, lettering in football in 1948 and 1949 and graduating with a degree in education in 1949. A running back (RB) is a member of the offensive backfield in gridiron football. Kenny King (running Back)
Kenneth Leon King (born March 7, 1957) is an American former professional football player who was a running back for seven seasons in the National Football League (NFL), primarily with the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders. He played college football for the Oklahoma Sooners. He was a starter for the Raiders in Super Bowl XV and Super Bowl XVIII. Jesse Baker (American Football)
Jesse Lewis Baker (July 10, 1957 – January 16, 1999) was an American professional football player who was a defensive end in the National Football League (NFL) for the Houston Oilers and the Dallas Cowboys. Baker played high school football for the Rockdale County High School Bulldogs in Conyers, Georgia in 1973 and 1974, where he earned all-state first-team honors both years. He was also a stand-out in track and field. He played college football at Jacksonville State University (JSU); while he was there, he was defensive MVP of the 1977 Grantland Rice Bowl, and was inducted to the JSU Hall of Fame in 1989. A defensive tackle (DT) is a position in American football that typically lines up on the line of scrimmage, opposite one of the Guard (American football), offensive guards; however, he may also line up opposite one of the offensive Tackle (gridiron football position), tackles. Defensive tackles are typically the largest and strongest of the defensive players. Depending on a team's defensive scheme, a defensive tackle may be called upon to fill several different roles. Mike Stensrud
Michael Iver Stensrud (February 19, 1956 – August 23, 2024) was an American professional football player who was a defensive lineman for five teams in 11 seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He wrestled for Lake Mills High School, winning the unlimited heavyweight bracket in the state tournament. He played college football for the Iowa State Cyclones, also tried out for the Cyclones wrestling team, and was selected in the second round of the 1979 NFL draft. After retiring from professional football, Stensrud lived in Houston, Texas. At his wife Laura's urging, Stensrud moved back to his hometown of Lake Mills, Iowa, where he worked at a lumber yard. John Facenda
John Thomas Ralph Augustine James Facenda ( ; August 8, 1913September 26, 1984) was an American broadcaster and sports announcer. He was a fixture on Philadelphia radio and television for decades, and achieved national fame as a narrator for NFL Films and '' Football Follies''.
