1979 Bluebonnet Bowl
The 1979 Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl was a college football postseason game between the Purdue Boilermakers and the Tennessee Volunteers. Background Tennessee won their first three games and entered the rankings at #19 before a game at Mississippi State. However, they fell out after losing to them 28–9 (the Bulldogs would go 3–8 that season). A win at Georgia Tech was followed by losses to #1 Alabama and Rutgers. A victory over #13 Notre Dame was their only win over a ranked opponent. They finished the season with a loss to Ole Miss and victories over Kentucky and Vanderbilt to place fifth in the Southeastern Conference. This was Tennessee's sixth bowl game in the decade. Astrodome
The NRG Astrodome, formerly and also known as the Houston Astrodome or simply the Astrodome, was the world's first multi-purpose, domed sports stadium, located in Houston, Texas, United States. Bluebonnet Bowl
The Bluebonnet Bowl was an annual college football bowl game played in Houston, Texas. A civic group was appointed by the Houston Chamber of Commerce Athletics Committee in 1959 to organize the bowl game. It was held at Rice Stadium (Rice University), Rice Stadium from 1959 through 1967, and again in 1985 and 1986. The game was played in the Reliant Astrodome, Astrodome from 1968 through 1984, as well in 1987. When held in the Astrodome, it was called the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl. The proceeds from the bowl games were distributed to various Harris County, Texas, Harris County charitable organizations. The game was discontinued following the 1987 season due to poor ticket sales and lack of a title sponsor.
