Elections In Peru
In Peru, the people directly elect a head of state (the president) as well as a legislature. The president is elected by the people for a five-year term. The unicameral Congress (''Congreso'') has 130 members, also elected for a five-year term by proportional representation. Peru has a multi-party system, which effectively bars one party from becoming the sole influence in a decision-making process. As such, parties must work with one another to form coalition governments. The whole election process is held by the National Jury of Elections and the National Office of Electoral Processes. Peru has compulsory voting. Revolutionary Government Of The Armed Forces Of Peru
The Revolutionary Government of the Armed Forces was a military dictatorship that ruled Peru from 1968 to 1980 after a successful coup d'état by the Armed Forces of Peru. The Revolutionary Junta, headed by Juan Velasco Alvarado, appointed him as the ''de facto'' leader of the government, which promoted revolutionary nationalism and left-wing ideas that left a deep impact in the country. Among the policies promoted were the promulgation of agrarian reform, the official recognition of Quechua, an increase of worker's rights, and the empowerment of workers' unions and indigenous Peruvians. Other measures, however, such as the nationalization of natural resources and the expropriation of companies and the media, generated a severe economic crisis and caused the international isolation of the country. In response to this situation, Alvarado was overthrown in 1975 by his prime minister Francisco Morales Bermúdez who took power to undo the socialist-leaning measures taken b ... Reformist Democratic Party
Reformist Democratic Party (in Spanish: ''Partido Democrático Reformista'') was a political party in Peru. It was founded in 1920 by Augusto Bernardino Leguía y Salcedo, whose regime, which began the previous year, had led to a dictatorial government. It was a party with a strong personal character, whose members included the friends and relatives of President Leguía, as well as many public employees. It lacked an ideology and an authentic program and was only organized to support Leguía in the perpetuation of him in power. After the fall of Leguía in 1930, it did not again have a leading role in Peruvian politics and ended up dissolving. Context At the end of the second government of President José Pardo y Barreda (of the Civilista Party), elections were called in 1919. The former president Augusto B. Leguía returned to Peru and launched his candidacy, supported by the Constitutional Party, whose leader was General Andrés Avelino Cáceres. Leguía presented himself ...
