1978 NSL Cup
The 1978 NSL Cup was the second season of the NSL Cup, which was the main national association football knockout cup competition in Australia. The competition was known as the Philips Cup under a sponsorship arrangement with Dutch company Philips. All 14 NSL teams from around Australia entered the competition, as well as a further 18 from various state leagues around Australia. Teams The NSL Cup was a knockout competition with 32 teams taking part all trying to reach the Final in October 1978. Brisbane City FC
Brisbane City Football Club is an Australian semi-professional football club based in Newmarket, Brisbane, Queensland. Founded in 1952, the club competed in the National Soccer League until the 1986 season where they were relegated back to State League Competition. Brisbane City competed in the National Premier Leagues Queensland from 2013, until they were relegated to the lower tier Football Queensland Premier League with one match remaining in the 2020 season. City's first match was a 0–1 defeat to Marconi at Perry Park on 3 April 1977 in front of a crowd of 5,214. Olympic Park Stadium (Melbourne)
Olympic Park Stadium was a multi-purpose outdoor stadium located on Olympic Boulevard in inner Melbourne. The stadium was built as an athletics training venue for the 1956 Olympics, a short distance from the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground), which served as the Olympic Stadium. Over the years it was the home of rugby league side, Melbourne Storm and the A-League team, Melbourne Victory; throughout its life the stadium played host to athletics. Olympic Park Stadium was located in Olympic Park, which is part of the Melbourne Sports and Entertainment Precinct. Olympic Park Stadium was demolished in 2012, and replaced with an Australian rules football ground. Jamie Paton
Jamie Paton is a former Australian international footballer. He began his football career with Queens Park in Scotland, performances led to a battle for his signature between Aston Villa & Celtic but not before the likes of Manchester United and Leeds United had courted him. Jamie had agreed in principle to join Aston Villa after a Scottish Cup match against Celtic, but after sustaining a knee injury in this game Villa decided against a move. Soon after Jamie was on a plane to Australia and joined Prahran Slavia in the Victorian State League in 1978. Gary Cole (soccer)
Gary Cole (born 5 February 1956) is an Australian football (soccer) player, who played for the Australia national football team 40 times and scored 20 goals between 1975 and 1984. He was most recently the Football director for A-League club Sydney FC, made redundant in December 2012. Playing career Transferred from Ringwood Wilhelmina to Fitzroy Alexander (later called Heidelberg United) in 1976 for a transfer fee of 6,000 after three years at Ringwood. Cole became one of the early stars of the National Soccer League as a striker, scoring 88 goals in six seasons at Heidelberg. In 1984, Cole moved to rival NSL club Preston Lions FC after injuring his ankle badly in 1983, and went on to score 21 goals for the club before retiring in 1986. On 14 August 1981, he scored seven goals against Fiji, and set an Australian record for the most goals scored in an international match. The Slavia Melbourne Soccer Club is a defunct Australian association football (soccer) club that was based in Melbourne, Victoria. The club was founded in 1950 by Czech migrants and became a leading club in Australian football. Slavia competed in the Victorian State League from 1956 to 1970 and 1973 to 1980. Through its history the club went by a number of names, starting out as Slavia, then Port Melbourne Slavia, Essendon Slavia and finally Prahran Slavia. The golden era of the club was in the 1960s where the club won many titles, most notably the Australian Cup in 1963.
