The following is a list of events relating to television in Ireland from 1978. Events *January – The controversial secondary school drama '' The Spike'' goes on air. It was pulled from the schedule following a nude scene in Episode 5 which sparked criticism from Irish conservatives, and has never been retransmitted. *March – George T. Waters is appointed as Director-General of RTÉ. *2 November – Ireland's second television channel, RTÉ 2 goes on air. The opening night features a variety gala performance from the Cork Opera House and the 1968 film ''Bullitt''. *6 November – The UK soap ''Coronation Street'' is aired for the first time on RTÉ 2. It had previously only been available to those who could receive UTV or HTV Wales. The Clifton House Mystery
''The Clifton House Mystery'' is a British children's cult television supernatural drama series written by Daniel Farson and Harry Moore, produced by Patrick Dromgoole and directed by Hugh David, and shown in 1978 by HTV for ITV. Plot Conductor Timothy Clare and his family – wife, daughter and two sons – move into an old house in Bristol they had just bought from the elderly Mrs Betterton; the house having been in her family for generations. While exploring the garden, Timothy's two sons notice that the house has an extra window, and deduce that a hidden room may exist. After breaking through an upstairs wall and discovering an ancient dusty bedroom, a long-dead skeleton is found in the four-poster bed. A number of strange incidents then start to occur. The radio service began on 1 January 1926, while regular television broadcasts began on 31 December 1961, making it one of the oldest continuously operating public service broadcasters in the world. The Great Grape Ape Show
''The Great Grape Ape Show'' is an American animated television series produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions and broadcast on ABC from September 6 to December 13, 1975. ABC continued to air it in reruns until 1978. Premise The title character is The Great Grape Ape (voiced by Bob Holt), who is a tall purple gorilla with the mind of a child. His catch phrase is saying his name twice ("Grape Ape, Grape Ape") after anything anyone says, usually as a form of agreement or acknowledgement of what was said. He travels the countryside with his canine pal Beegle Beagle (voiced by Marty Ingels), whom he calls "Beegly Beagly". Grape Ape's immense size tends to initially shock and frighten those unfamiliar with him, and his presence alone has often terrified people and animals, causing them to run off screaming invariably: "YEOW! Bruce Forsyth's Big Night
''Bruce Forsyth's Big Night'' is a TV show screened on ITV on Saturday nights in late 1978. It starred Bruce Forsyth. 12 episodes were broadcast between 7 October and 31 December 1978 with guests including Elton John, Lena Zavaroni, Dolly Parton and Karen Carpenter. Two further one-off specials were shown on 4 April 1980 and 21 September 1980 where Forsyth got the chance to perform an hour long show with idol and long-time friend Sammy Davis Jr, who had been a guest on an earlier show, which Forsyth later said was the best show he'd ever been associated with. The show was made by London Weekend Television. Following the huge success enjoyed by ''The Generation Game'', Forsyth was poached from the BBC for a reported £15,000 a show () with each show having a budget of £250,000 (). ''Sha Na Na'' is a syndicated television variety series that ran from 1977 to 1981 for a total of 97 episodes, hosted by the popular rock & roll/comedy group of the same name. The show was produced by Pierre Cossette and originally distributed by the Lexington Broadcast Services Company. Each episode ran for 22 minutes. Reruns continued to air in syndication through the 1982-1983 television season, after which the series left most markets. The show featured the group performing hits from the 1950s and 1960s along with comedy skits along the show's nostalgic theme but with a contemporary twist, with performances from that era's well-known acts as well as popular acts of the 1970s. ''Armchair Thriller'' is a British television drama series broadcast on ITV in 1978 and 1980 in two seasons. Taking the form of a sequence of unconnected serials, scripts for ''Armchair Thriller'' were adaptations of published novels and stories. Although not strictly a horror series, it did sometimes include supernatural elements. ''Armchair Thriller'' was mainly produced by Thames Television, but it included two serials from Southern Television.
