The 1977 Spillers Greyhound Derby took place during June with the final being held on 25 June 1977 at White City Stadium. The winner was Balliniska Band and the winning owner Raphael Bacci received £17,500. The competition was sponsored by the Spillers. English Greyhound Derby
The English Greyhound Derby is the most prestigious race on the British Greyhound racing in the United Kingdom, greyhound racing calendar, with a history stretching back to 1927. It was first held at White City Stadium, but moved to Wimbledon Stadium in 1985, and then Towcester Greyhound Stadium in 2017, Nottingham in 2019 and back to Towcester in 2021. Only four greyhounds have won the event twice, Mick the Miller, Patricias Hope, Rapid Ranger and Westmead Hawk. Trainer Charlie Lister OBE has won the event a record seven times. White City Stadium
White City Stadium in London, England, was built for the 1908 Summer Olympics. It hosted the finish of the first modern marathon and swimming, speedway, boxing, show jumping, athletics, stock car racing, concerts and a match at the 1966 FIFA World Cup, 1966 World Cup. Competition Report The previous system of having two non-betting qualifying rounds was scrapped and replaced by just one, which required the field to be whittled down to 48 runners by the time of the actual second round. The winner was Lacca Champion and the winning owners Paul Howell, Sandra Howell and David Hill received a record £20,000. The competition was sponsored by the Spillers. Competition Report The Derby attracted a significant number of runners from Ireland with 21 of the 163 hopefuls making the journey. The first round was held at different tracks which proved unpopular. Scurry Gold Cup champion Jet Control ran in a heat the night after winning the Laurels. Ante-post favourite Witchs Champion went out in round two and Heres Tat ran well below expectation but the Ger McKenna trained greyhound retained the overall favouritism. Spillers
Spillers Ltd was a British company that owned flour milling operations, operated bakeries and also sold pet food and equine feeds. History The business originated in 1829 from the establishment of a flour mill in Bridgwater, Somerset, by Joel Spiller. The business rapidly expanded to other parts of England and Wales. In 1855 Spillers began to manufacture ships' biscuits. By 1854, Spiller opened a flour mill in Cardiff with his business partner Samuel Browne. The mill burned down in 1882 and was rebuilt in 1887 incorporating two other mills. In 1893 a mill was built in Cardiff that formed part of a complex of steam-powered roller mills with a capacity of 100,000 tons per year. Belle Vue Stadium
Belle Vue Stadium was a Greyhound racing in the United Kingdom, greyhound racing track in Belle Vue, Manchester, England, where the first race around an oval track in Britain was held on 24 July 1926. It has also been used for motorcycle speedway, as the home ground of the team Belle Vue Aces in 1928 and from 1988 until 2015, and from 1999 until 2019 for stock car racing and banger racing. The track was owned (1926–2014) and operated (1926–2019) by the Greyhound Racing Association. The Crown Oil Pension Fund bought the stadium in 2014. The stadium had luxury glass-fronted grandstands, restaurants, hospitality boxes and bars. Geoff De Mulder
Geoffrey De Mulder (1930 – 11 December 2009) was an English greyhound trainer. He was a two times champion trainer of Great Britain and was regarded as the leading trainer during the 1970s and 1980s. De Mulder won the Greyhound Trainer of the Year twice in 1978 and 1979. Early life He was born in Yorkshire and grew up in a greyhound racing environment because his father Joe De Mulder was a prominent trainer during the 1950s and 1960s. Career After learning his trade with his father he took over the National Greyhound Racing Club licence in 1967 and he made the Gold Collar final in his rookie year. His father retained ownership of several greyhounds in the kennel. The majority of his kennel were open race class greyhounds but he held attachments throughout the Midlands at Oxford Stadium, Nottingham Stadium, Coventry Stadium, Hall Green Stadium and Norton Canes Stadium. Hall Green Stadium
Hall Green Stadium was a greyhound racing stadium located in the Birmingham suburb of Hall Green, which existed from 1927 until 2017. The track itself was a 412-metre long oval track with a sand covered surface. The capacity of the stadium was between 2,500 and 3,000. Facilities The stadium's main stand facilities included outside terracing along the main straight, fast food outlets, a bar on the first floor, and an indoor seated area with glass frontage overlooking the track on second floor. Also on the second floor was the a la carte restaurant. Executive suites that can hold between 18 and 100 people were located on the first bend of the track. Nick Savva
Nicolas Savva known as Nick Savva is a greyhound trainer and breeder. He is a four times winner of the English Greyhound Derby and is regarded as Britain's most successful breeder, along with his wife Natalie Savva (1935–2019) who also held the kennels training licence at one time. Early life Savva was born in 1934 in Cyprus and left the island country for London where he gained work in an engineering factory and then a restaurant. He started attending race meetings at Harringay Stadium in 1952 and started a dressmaking business. He met Natalie Drew in 1957 and they married in 1961 before selling his dressmaking business and buying a kennels. Career Nick and Natalie started training and breeding greyhounds and became increasingly successful. Milton Keynes Greyhound Stadium was a Greyhound racing in the United Kingdom, greyhound racing and Motorcycle speedway, speedway stadium, in Milton Keynes located on the Groveway in Simpson and Ashland, Ashland. Origins & opening The stadium opened as an independent track on 25 July 1963 and was called the Groveway Greyhound Stadium. The name Groveway came from the Grove Way road that passed the stadium on the north side joining the small town of Bletchley with the village of Simpson. The track had been built four years before the birth of a large new town called Milton Keynes (named after one of the 15 villages) in a planned 34 square mile area. Birchfield Ladbroke Stadium
The Birchfield Ladbroke Stadium, also known as the old Perry Barr Greyhound Stadium or Alexander Sports Stadium was a former greyhound racing and Motorcycle speedway stadium in Birchfield in the north of Birmingham, England. It is not to be confused with the current Perry Barr Stadium on the other side of the Walsall Road and accessed from Aldridge Road. Speedway Origins The third greyhound track to open in Birmingham was Perry Barr in the Birchfield area of North Birmingham. Kings Heath Stadium and Hall Green Stadium had both opened in 1927 to large audiences and Perry Barr soon followed in the spring of 1928. The track was situated west of the Walsall Road on the opposite side of the road from the Alexander Sports Ground and accessed on Regina Drive. Puppy Derby (Irish Greyhounds)
The Puppy Derby also known as the Juvenile Derby is a greyhound racing competition held annually at Shelbourne Park in Dublin, Ireland. The event switched to Shelbourne following the closure of Harold's Cross Stadium in the city district of Harold's Cross. It is a major competition inaugurated in 1943 and is an integral part of the Irish greyhound racing calendar. The event is the Irish equivalent of the Puppy Derby held in the UK at Wimbledon Stadium. The competition restricted to puppies has a tradition for providing many stars of the future.
