1976 Arizona Senate Election
The 1976 Arizona Senate election was held on November 2, 1976. Voters elected members of the Arizona Senate in all 30 of the state's legislative districts to serve a two-year term. Primary elections were held on September 7, 1976. Prior to the elections, the Democrats held a majority of 18 seats over the Republicans' 12 seats. Following the election, Democrats maintained control of the chamber with 16 Democrats to 14 Republicans, a net gain of two seats for Republicans. The newly elected senators served in the 33rd Arizona State Legislature. Arizona's 6th legislative district is one of 30 in the state, consisting of all of Apache County and sections of Coconino County, Gila County, Graham County, Mohave County, Navajo County, and Pinal County. As of 2023, there are 108 precincts in the district, with a total registered voter population of 151,306. The district has an overall population of 225,474. Following the 2020 United States redistricting cycle, the Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission (AIRC) redrew legislative district boundaries in Arizona. The 6th district was drawn to guarantee ''a majority Native American constituency'', with 61% of residents being non-Hispanic Native Americans. Jim Kolbe
James Thomas Kolbe (June 28, 1942 – December 3, 2022) was an American politician who served as a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives. He represented Arizona's 5th congressional district from 1985 to 2003 and its 8th congressional district from 2003 to 2007. A moderate, pro–abortion rights Republican, he came out as gay in 1996 after voting in support of the Defense of Marriage Act; his subsequent re-elections made him the second openly gay Republican elected to Congress. After leaving Congress, Kolbe served on the Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations under Democratic president Barack Obama.
