The 1975 Melbourne Cup was a handicap horse race which took place on Tuesday, 4 November 1975 over 3200m, at Flemington Racecourse. Background The race was won by the gelding Think Big, trained by Bart Cummings and ridden by Harry White. The combination of Think Big, Bart Cummings and Harry White had also won the 1974 Melbourne Cup. The runner up was Holiday Waggon also trained by Bart Cummings, and third place went to Medici. The winning margin was three quarters of a length with three lengths to third place. This win gave Bart Cummings his fifth Melbourne Cup win equaling the record of Etienne L. de Mestre in the period 1861 to 1878. It was also Bart's fourth quinella of the race. Melbourne Cup
The Melbourne Cup is an annual Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race held in Melbourne, Australia, at the Flemington Racecourse. It is a 3200-metre race for three-year-olds and older, conducted by the Victoria Racing Club that forms part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. It is the richest two-mile handicap in the world and one of the richest turf races. The event starts at 3:00 pm on the first Tuesday of November and is known locally as "the race that stops the nation". The Melbourne Cup has cemented itself as a part of Melbourne and Australian culture, having been run every year since 1861 (except for an intermission during World War I and World War II). Bill Collins (racecaller)
William Henry Collins OAM (23 September 1928 – 14 June 1997) was an Australian racecaller and radio and television personality who earned the reputation for being able to accurately call the winner of even the closest of races. Known as "The Accurate One", he was well known for his call of the Melbourne Cup each year. One of his most notable commentaries was the 1986 Cox Plate, dubbed the " Race of the Century". Collins also called important races internationally including the UK, US, South Africa, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Singapore. Collins died on 14 June 1997 from cancer. Radio and television broadcasting Collins' radio career began in the early 1950s in Sale, Victoria, and in 1953 he moved to Melbourne where he worked as a racecaller for the radio station 3DB, and appeared on television hosting the musical comedy program '' Sunnyside Up'' at HSV-7, leading to a Logie Award in 1959 for ''Outstanding Performance''. Malcolm Johnston (jockey)
Malcolm Johnston (born 19 October 1956) is a retired Australian jockey. Johnston was raised in the rural town of Forbes, New South Wales. He went to Sydney, as an apprentice jockey underneath trainer Theo Green, riding his first winner in Sydney at Rosehill in 1973. Johnston would go on to win three Sydney apprentice premierships, as well as winning the overall jockeys title when still an apprentice, riding 107.5 winners in the 1975–76 season. He won a further two jockeys premierships in 1977–78, and 1986–87. Johnston is most renowned for his association with the horse Kingston Town which he rode in 25 of the horse's 30 victories. Johnston retired in 1993, having ridden over 2,000 winners, including 37 at Group One level. Hyperno
Hyperno (1973–2002) was a Thoroughbred racehorse foaled in New Zealand. He was a wayward but brilliant galloper that won the 1979 Melbourne Cup and other group and listed races. He was sired by Rangong (GB) out of Mikarla (NZ) by Persian Garden II (GB). He was trained in his early years at Caulfield by Geoff Murphy. A dispute over training methods between Murphy and Hyperno's owners in 1978 led to Bart Cummings taking over as trainer. Arwon (foaled 8 September 1973, died 25 May 2007) was a New Zealand-bred thoroughbred racehorse by Aritzo from Fair Flash who won the 1978 Melbourne Cup. In New Zealand, he was known and raced as Flash Guy. Arwon won the 1978 Melbourne Cup, beating Dandeleith and Karu by a half neck. Flemington Racecourse
Flemington Racecourse is a major horse racing venue located in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is most notable for hosting the Melbourne Cup, which is the world's richest handicap and the world's richest 3200-metre horse race. The racecourse is situated on low alluvial flats, next to the Maribyrnong River. The area was first used for horse racing in March 1840.
