1972 Summer Paralympics
The 1972 Summer Paralympics (), the fourth edition of the Paralympic Games, were held in Heidelberg, West Germany, from 2 to 11 August 1972. Organised under the guidance of the International Stoke Mandeville Games Federation (ISMGF), they were known as the 21st International Stoke Mandeville Games at the time. The games ended 15 days before the 1972 Summer Olympics held in Munich, also in West Germany. Sports As with previous Paralympics, the 1972 games were intended for wheelchair athletes only. Brazil sent a delegation to compete at the 1972 Summer Paralympics in Heidelberg, West Germany. They sent eight competitors, eight male and none female. Disability classifications Athletes at the Paralympics in 1972 were all afflicted by spinal cord injuries and required the use of a wheelchair. This is in contrast to later Paralympics that include events for participants that fit into any of five different disability categories; amputation, either congenital or sustained through injury or illness; cerebral palsy; wheelchair athletes; visual impairment, including blindness; Les autres, any physical disability that does not fall strictly under one of the other categories, for example dwarfism or multiple sclerosis. A National Olympic Committee (NOC) is a national constituent of the worldwide Olympic movement. Subject to the controls of the International Olympic Committee, NOCs are responsible for organizing their people's participation in the Olympic Games. They may nominate cities within their respective areas as candidates for future Olympic Games. NOCs also promote the development of athletes and the training of coaches and officials at a national level within their geographies. Wheelchair basketball at the 1972 Summer Paralympics consisted of men's and women's team events. Medal summary Source: Paralympic.org Classification system From 1969 to 1973, a classification system designed by Australian Dr. Bedwell was used. This system used some muscle testing to determine which class incomplete paraplegics should be classified in. It used a point system based on the ISMGF classification system. Class IA, IB and IC were worth 1 point. Class II for people with lesions between T1-T5 and no balance were also worth 1 point. Class III for people with lesions at T6-T10 and have fair balance were worth 1 point. Class IV was for people with lesions at T11-L3 and good trunk muscles. They were worth 2 points. Snooker at the 1972 Summer Paralympics consisted of two men's events. The competitions were held at the sports grounds of the Institute for Sport and Sports Science of the University of Heidelberg and the National Institute for Sport in August 1972. There were eight competitors, from six countries: three from Great Britain, and one each from Australia, Ireland, Italy, Kenya and the United States. Michael Shelton won the gold medal in the men's paraplegic event, following his wins at the 1964 and 1968 games, and P. Haslam won the gold in the Men's tetraplegic competition.
