1971 Intercontinental Cup
The 1971 Intercontinental Cup was an association football tie held over two legs in December 1971 between the runners-up of the 1970–71 European Cup, Panathinaikos, replacing European Cup winners Ajax which declined to participate, and Nacional, winners of the 1971 Copa Libertadores. The first leg was held on 15 December 1971 at the Karaiskakis Stadium, home of Olympiacos, as Panathinaikos ground was deemed unsuitable. The match finished up as a 1–1 draw. The goals came from Totis Filakouris in the 48th minute and Luis Artime in the 50th minute. Julio Morales broke the leg of Yiannis Tomaras and was sent off. Intercontinental Cup (1960–2004)
The Intercontinental Cup, officially the European/South American Cup and known from 1980 as the Toyota Cup for sponsorship reasons, was an international association football, football competition endorsed by UEFA (Europe) and CONMEBOL (South America), contested between representative clubs from these confederations, usually the winners of the UEFA Champions League and the South American Copa Libertadores. It ran from 1960 to 2004, when it was succeeded by the FIFA Club World Cup, although they both ran concurrently in 2000. From its formation in 1960 to 1979, the competition was as a two-legged tie, with a play-off if necessary until 1968, and Penalty kick (association football), penalty kicks later. 1971 Copa Libertadores
The Copa Libertadores 1971 was the 12th edition of the Copa Libertadores, CONMEBOL's annual international club tournament. Club Nacional de Football, Nacional won the competition, defeating in the final the defending champions Estudiantes de La Plata, Estudiantes, who were seeking a fourth consecutive title. Mitsos Dimitriou
Dimitrios "Mitsos" Dimitriou (; 1948–2002) was a Greek football defender. Career Dimitriou played club football for Panathinaikos, appearing in 254 league matches in more than a decade with the club. He was runner up at 1971 European Cup Final but he didn't play due to injury. He played at 1971 Intercontinental Cup. Dimitriou won 4 Greek championships (1969, 1970, 1972, 1977) and 2 Greek cups (1969, 1977). Kostas Eleftherakis
Kostas Eleftherakis (, born 18 July 1950) is a Greek former international football player who played as a midfielder. His nickname was ''"the Deer"'' ''()''. Club career He started his career in 1964–65, playing for second division side Fostiras. He later joined Panathinaikos in 1968. At age 21 he played for Panathinaikos at 1971 European Cup Final in Wembley Stadium against Ajax Amsterdam. He scored 2 goals during that campaign to reach the final. Frangiskos Sourpis
Frangiskos Sourpis (; born 4 March 1943) is a former Greek footballer, centre-back for Panathinaikos from 1962 until 1973. Career Born in Kifisia, Sourpis was talented at the pole vault and volleyball, but chose to play football with Panathinaikos F.C. He partnered Takis Papoulidis in the centre of defence in the 4-3-3 formation that coach Stjepan Bobek used at Panathinaikos. He played a total of 11 seasons for Panathinaikos, winning the Greek Alpha Ethniki six times (1962, 1964, 1965, 1969, 1970, 1972), two Greek Football Cups, and helped the club reach the 1971 European Cup Final. Anthimos Kapsis
Anthimos Kapsis (; born 3 September 1950) is a Greek former International footballer who played as a sweeper. Career Born in Astypalaia, Kapsis' family moved to Keratsini when he was young. Kapsis played for the Panathinaikos F.C. from 1969 until 1984 and was a member of that team when it played in Wembley Stadium, located in London, England, in the 1971 European Cup Final. As player of Panthinaikos he won five greek championships (1969, 1970, 1972, 1977, 1984), four greek cups (1969, 1977, 1982, 1984) and one Balkans Cup (1977). Kapsis was capped 36 times by the Greece national team and was a member of the team that competed in Euro 1980. Goal difference, goal differential or points difference is a form of tiebreaker used to rank sport teams which finish on equal points in a league competition. Yiannis Tomaras (Greek: Γιάννης Τομαράς; born 16 March 1947) is a former Greek football player of the late 1960s - early 1970s era. Julio César Morales Araújo, nicknamed ''Cascarilla'' (16 February 1945 – 14 February 2022) was a Uruguayan professional footballer who played as a striker. Luis Artime (born 2 December 1938) is an Argentine former association football, footballer, who played as a Striker (association football), striker, and scored more than 1,000 goals during his career. His son Luis Fabián Artime is also a retired Argentine footballer who played in the 1990s. Club career Artime was born in Parque Civit in Mendoza Province. Totis Filakouris
Panagiotis "Totis" Filakouris (born 1 March 1947) is a Greek former footballer who played as a forward. Fylakouris played for Panathinaikos for ten years from 1965 until 1975 and was a member of the team that played in the final of the European Cup of Champions in 1971 at Wembley Stadium. Late in his career he also had a stint with Ethnikos Piraeus. After his playing days were over, Fylakouris coached Greek-American clubs in the US and was also coach for Panachaiki and interim coach for Panathinaikos in 2005.
