1970 Arizona Senate Election
The 1970 Arizona Senate election was held on November 3, 1970. Voters elected all 30 members of the Arizona Senate to serve two-year terms. The 1970 election ushered in the restructuring of the Arizona Legislature to its current format. There are 30 electoral districts across the state, each district electing a single state senator and two state representatives. Primary elections were held on September 8, 1970. Prior to the elections, the Republicans held a majority of 17 seats over the 13 seats held by Democrats. Following the election, Republicans maintained control of the chamber and expanded their majority to 18 Republicans to 12 Democrats, a net gain of one seat for Republicans. Arizona's 9th Legislative District
Arizona's 9th Legislative District is one of 30 in the state, consisting of a section of Maricopa County. As of 2023, there are 65 precincts in the district, all in Pima, with a total registered voter population of 162,116. The district has an overall population of 243,411. Isabel Burgess
Isabel Andrews Burgess (née Andrews; April 3, 1912 – September 17, 1999) was an American politician and public official from Phoenix, Arizona who is known for her contributions to transportation safety at the federal level, including her tenure on the National Transportation Safety Board. Early life and education Burgess was born in Cleveland, Ohio on April 3, 1912 to William Andrews and Alice Ball Andrews (the daughter of Webb C. Ball). Burgess spent one year of post-secondary matriculation at Mills College and another at Case Western Reserve University, where she majored in art history. During this time she was very active in the League of Women Votes, where she was elected President of her chapter. Sandra Day O'Connor
Sandra Day O'Connor (born March 26, 1930) is an American retired attorney and politician who served as the first female associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1981 to 2006. She was both the first woman nominated and the first confirmed to the court. John Bertrand Conlan
John Bertrand Conlan (September 17, 1930 – June 18, 2021) was an American lawyer and Republican politician. He served as a State Senator from 1965 to 1972 and as a United States representative from Arizona from 1973 to 1977. Early life and career Born in Oak Park, Illinois, Conlan was the son of Ruth (Anderson) and Hall of Fame baseball umpire Jocko Conlan. He attended Illinois public schools and received a B.S. from Northwestern University, where he joined Delta Upsilon. He later graduated from Harvard Law School, received a Fulbright Scholarship to study at the University of Cologne, and studied at The Hague Academy of International Law. Conlan was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1954 and commenced practice in Chicago. He then served as a captain in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1961.
