Cypriot First Division
The Cypriot First Division ( el, Πρωτάθλημα Α΄ Κατηγορίας) is the top tier football league competition in Cyprus, run by the Cyprus Football Association. Since February 2016, it is sponsored by Cyta and is thus officially known as the Cyta Championship. The league is contested by 14 teams and runs from August to May, with the three lowest-placed teams being relegated to the Cypriot Second Division, and replaced by the top three teams in that division. History Football was introduced to Cyprus early in the 20th century by the British. Initially played in the island's schools, it proved hugely popular and a number of clubs were duly formed. Since 1911, when Anorthosis Famagusta FC was founded, many clubs were established and in 1932 the Cypriot Championship began annually at first unofficially. Athlitiki Enosi Lemesou ( el, Αθλητική Ένωση Λεμεσού, translation=Athletic Union of Limassol) commonly known as AEL, is a Cypriot sports club based in the city of Limassol, most famous for its football team. AEL also maintains a men's and women's basketball teams, a women's volleyball team and a (newly established in 1976) Futsal team, a women's handball team as well as a cricket team. The 1970–71 Cypriot Second Division was the 16th season of the Cypriot second-level football league. APOP Paphos FC won their 2nd title. 1970–71 European Cup Winners' Cup
The 1970–71 season of the European Cup Winners' Cup football club tournament was won by Chelsea in a replay against Real Madrid. Defending champions Manchester City were eliminated by Chelsea in the semi-finals, only the second ever tie in the competition between two clubs from the same country. These two sides would later compete in the 2021 UEFA Champions League final, with Chelsea winning 1–0. The finals were played in Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus, Greece. 1970–71 European Cup
The 1970–71 season of the European Cup club football tournament was won by Ajax in the final against Panathinaikos. It was the first time the cup went to Ajax, beginning a three-year period of domination, and the second consecutive championship for the Netherlands. Feyenoord, the defending champions, were eliminated by Romanian club UTA Arad in the first round. UEFA had introduced for first time the penalty shoot-out as a way of deciding drawn ties – doing away with the unsatisfactory tossing of a coin. They had also decided that the away goals rule should apply to all rounds, and not just the first two, as had been the case. Alki Larnaca ( el, ΑΛΚΗ Λάρνακας, ''ALKI Larnakas'') was a Cypriot football club based in the town of Larnaca. The club was founded in 1948 and it was dissolved on the 6th of May of 2014 due to financial issues. The club's colours were blue and red. They reached the Cypriot Cup final on five occasions without a win. History 1979 was the best year in club's history. They finished third in the Cypriot Championship and played the final in the Cypriot Cup, losing to APOEL Nicosia, which were also the champions. That gave them the right to play in the UEFA Cup, where they were eliminated in the first round by Dinamo Bucharest. ASIL Lysi ( el, ΑΣΙΛ Λύσης) is a Cypriot football club which was established in the town of Lysi, Famagusta. After the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, ASIL became a refugee team and is temporarily based in Larnaca. The club plays in the Cypriot Third Division.
