Elections In Suriname
Suriname elects on the national level a head of state – the president – and a legislature. The president is elected for a five-year term by an electoral college based on the parliament. The National Assembly (''Nationale Assemblée'') has 51 members, elected every five years by proportional representation per district. Suriname has a multi-party system, with numerous parties in which no one party often has a chance of gaining power alone, and parties must work with each other to form coalition governments. The Nationalist Republican Party ( nl, Partij Nationalistische Republiek, PNR) was a political party in Suriname, existing from 1959 to 1980. History In 1951, Surinamese students in the Netherlands founded the cultural association ''Wi Eigi Sani'' ("our own things"). In 1959, the association became a political party under the name "Nationalist Republican Party" (PNR), and began its activities in Suriname. In the 1969 parliamentary election, the party secured one seat, by Eddy Bruma. In 1973, in a coalition with the National Party of Suriname, the party won 4 seats in the parliament. In the cabinet of Henck Arron from December 24, 1973 to 1977, the cabinet consisted of 3 representatives of the party. In 1977, the coalition broke up and the Nationalist Republican Party went to the elections independently, without receiving seats in the parliament. Progressive Surinamese People's Party
The Progressive Surinamese People's Party ( nl, Progressieve Surinaamse Volkspartij, PSV) was a political party in Suriname. The party was a member of the Christian Democrat Organization of America. The party was founded in August 1946 by, among others, Father Jozef Weidmann and Coen Ooft. In 1948, party member , on behalf of the PSV, went to the First Round Table Conference in the Netherlands, where he pleaded for universal suffrage for men and women. One of the results of this conference was that the census and capacity selection right for men was replaced by a universal suffrage for men and women. In 1955 three PSV politicians were elected and soon after that two members of the PSV became minister: Willem Smit (Finance) and Lucien Rens (Education and Community Development). National Party Of Suriname
The National Party of Suriname ( nl, Nationale Partij Suriname, NPS) is a social democratic political party in Suriname, founded in 1946, and since June 2012 led by Gregory Rusland. For a long time it was the largest ruling party in the country, and it has been in government for a total of over 40 years. Of the 16 general elections held in Suriname, the party or a coalition it was a leading part of finished in first place 11 times. The party tends to be more popular among Afro-Surinamese and multiracial people. At the 2005 legislative elections, the party was part of the New Front for Democracy and Development that won 41.2% of the popular vote and 23 out of 51 seats in the National Assembly.
