1969 Pacific Conference Games
The 1969 Pacific Conference Games was the first edition of the international athletics competition between five Pacific coast nations: Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand and the United States. Tony Powell (born 13 September 1943) is a Canadian sprinter. He competed in Athletics at the 1969 Canada Games -Men's 200 metres, 400 metres, 4 x 100 metres relay and the 4 x 400 metres relay, winning 4 gold medals (one in each event),. Powell competed in Athletics at the 1969 Pacific Conference Games – Men's 400 Metres (Bronze Medal) and anchored the Men's 4 x 400 metres relay (Silver Medal). In 1969, Powell was Canadian Champion in the 200 metres and 400 metres and was named "Outstanding Male Athlete" at the Canadian National Championships, Powell competed in Athletics at the 1970 Commonwealth Games – Men's 100 metres and 200 metres, and anchored the Men's 4 × 400 metres relay,. Tracy Evans Smith (born March 15, 1945, in Altadena, California) is a former American distance runner. He was a member of the 1968 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Team, competing in the 10,000 meters. He was ranked multiple times by Track & Field News as the No. 1 U.S. 5,000- and 10,000-meter runner in the mid- to late ‘60s, and was a six-time AAU National Champion from 1966 to 1973, winning outdoors in the 3-mile, 6-mile and 10,000 meters, and three times in the indoor 3-mile. Dick Tayler
Richard John Tayler (born 12 August 1948) is a former New Zealand runner who mostly competed in distances from 1500 m to 10,000 m. Tayler was born in Timaru in 1948. He is best known for winning the 10,000 metres at the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand. In the race he won in a time of 27:46.4 minutes, beating Dave Black of England by 2 seconds. Tayler competed at the 1970 and 1974 Commonwealth Games, as well as the 1972 Summer Olympics. He finished 12th at the 1st IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Waregem, Belgium, 1973. Arthritis cut short Tayler's running career. Anthony Charles Benson (born 20 May 1942) is an Australian former long-distance runner who competed in the 1972 Summer Olympics. As an athlete, Benson won the 1969 Pacific Conference Games 1500m, set Australian 2000m and 3000m records, ran a sub 4 minute mile and the world’s 8th fastest ever time for 3000m, recorded a world-best time of 27:37 for a road 10 kilometres, was ranked 5th in the world over 5000m, and represented Australia at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Benson was a high school teacher during his athletic career but was later employed as the national coach of the Philippines (1979-1983) and Australia (1988-1993) teams.
