1968 NCAA Soccer Championship
The 1968 NCAA soccer tournament was the tenth annual tournament organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association to determine the national champion of men's college soccer among its members in the United States. The final match was played at Grant Field in Atlanta on December 7. Michigan State and Maryland were declared co-national champions after the championship game ended in a 2–2 tie after two overtime periods. This was Michigan State's second and Maryland's first national title. Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field is the football stadium located at the corner of North Avenue at Techwood Drive on the campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. It has been home to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football team, often referred to as the " Ramblin' Wreck", in rudimentary form since 1905 and as a complete stadium since 1913. The West Chester Golden Rams represent West Chester University of Pennsylvania, which is located in West Chester, Pennsylvania, in intercollegiate sports. In association football, a penalty shoot-out (previously known as kicks from the penalty mark) is a tie-breaking method to determine which team is awarded victory in a match that cannot end in a draw, when the score is tied after the normal time as well as extra time (if used) has expired. For example, in a FIFA World Cup, penalties are used in elimination matches; the round of 32, the round of 16, the quarter-finals, the semi-finals, and the final. In a penalty shoot-out, each team takes turns shooting at goal from the penalty mark, with the goal defended only by the opposing team's goalkeeper. Each team has five shots which must be taken by different players; the team that makes more successful kicks is declared the victor. Shoot-outs finish as soon as one team has an insurmountable lead. The West Virginia Mountaineers men's soccer team is the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I soccer team of West Virginia University (WVU).
