1967 Targa Florio
The 51° Targa Florio took place on 14 May 1967, on the Circuito Piccolo delle Madonie, Sicily (Italy). pp. 60-1 Race For the race, Scuderia Ferrari was unexpectedly deprived of Lorenzo Bandini, who died just four days earlier following a dramatic accident during the 1967 Monaco Grand Prix. Despite the loss, the race promised to be very competitive. Ferrari entrusted its 330 P4 to the duo Vaccarella/ Scarfiotti and also deployed a smaller Dino 206 S. Porsche responded with its stable of 6 and 8-cylinders 910. Alfa Romeo deployed the relatively new 2.0 V8 Tipo 33. Ford and Lola supplied their GT40 and T70 respectively to privateers. A notable entrant was the Chaparral 2F of Hill/Sharp with its eye-catching high wing. The 330 P4 started well, and soon took the lead. As motorsport competition is an expensive endeavor, some degree of factory support is desired and often necessary for success. Jean Guichet
Jean Guichet (born 10 August 1927 in Marseille, France) is a French industrialist and former racing driver. He is best known for winning the 1964 24 Hours of Le Mans with co-driver Nino Vaccarella, driving a Ferrari 275 P for Scuderia Ferrari. Herbert Müller (racing Driver)
Herbert Müller Rebmann (11 May 1940 – 24 May 1981) was a racing driver from Switzerland. He was born in Reinach and was nicknamed ''Stumpen-Herbie''. Among other successes, he won the Targa Florio twice, in 1966 and 1973, both with Porsche. Driving a Ferrari 512 in an Interserie race at the Nürburgring, he survived a fiery start collision that ended in the pit lane next to a fire engine. Müller got out of the car and ran towards a fire fighter who put out the flames on his overall. He died in the 1981 1000 km Nürburgring in his Porsche 908 Turbo, racing with his longtime friend Siegfried Brunn. Before the event, Müller stated that he would retire from motorsports after the end of the race. Ferrari 412P
The Ferrari P was a series of Italian sports prototype racing cars produced by Ferrari during the 1960s and early 1970s. Although Enzo Ferrari resisted the move even with Cooper dominating F1, Ferrari began producing mid-engined racing cars in the early 1960s with the Dino-V6-engine Formula One Ferrari 246 P and the sport prototype SP-series. Scuderia Filipinetti (also French name ''Ecurie Filipinetti'') was a Swiss motor racing team that competed in sports car racing and occasionally in Formula One between 1962 and 1973. It was founded by Georges Filipinetti (1907-1973) to support Swiss driver Jo Siffert, but employed many other drivers including Jim Clark, Phil Hill and Ronnie Peterson. James "Hap" Sharp (January 1, 1928 – May 7, 1993) was an American race car driver who drove in six Formula One Grands Prix. Phil Hill
Philip Toll Hill Jr. (April 20, 1927 – August 28, 2008) was an American automobile racing driver. He was one of two American drivers to win the Formula One World Drivers' Championship, and the only one who was born in the United States (the other, Mario Andretti, was born in Italy and later became an American citizen). The Chaparral 2F is a Group 6 sports prototype designed by Jim Hall and Hap Sharp, and built under their company Chaparral Cars. Built with the intention to compete in the World Sportscar Championship, it competed in the 1967 season, with a best finish of first at the BOAC 500, driven by Phil Hill and Mike Spence. In motorsport, a privateer is usually an entrant into a racing event that is not directly supported by an automobile or motorcycle manufacturer. Privateers teams are often found competing in rally, circuit racing and motorcycle racing events and often include competitors who build and maintain their own vehicles and motorcycles. In previous Formula One seasons, privately owned teams would race using the chassis of another team or constructor in preference to building their own car; the Concorde Agreement now prohibits this practice.
