1967 Intercontinental Cup
The 1967 Intercontinental Cup was a football tie held over three legs in 1967 between the winners of the 1966–67 European Cup, The Celtic Football Club from Scotland, and Racing Club from Argentina, winners of the 1967 Copa Libertadores. The first leg was played at Hampden Park in Glasgow, with Celtic winning 1–0 through a Billy McNeill header. The game was enhanced by Racing's incessant attacking and fierce defending. The return match at El Cilindro in Avellaneda was also acrimonious, with Celtic's Ronnie Simpson struck by an object thrown from the crowd just before the start of the match. He was badly dazed and had to be replaced by John Fallon. Celtic again took the lead, but Racing fought back to win 2–1 through goals from Norberto Raffo and Juan Carlos Cárdenas. 1968 Intercontinental Cup
The 1968 Intercontinental Cup was an association football tie held over two legs in 1968 between the winners of the 1967–68 European Cup, Manchester United, and Estudiantes de La Plata, winners of the 1968 Copa Libertadores. The first leg was held on 25 September 1968 at the '' Estadio Boca Juniors'', as Estudiantes' ground was deemed unsuitable. Nevertheless, Estudiantes won the first leg 1–0, the winning goal awarded to Marcos Conigliaro in the 27th minute. Old Trafford hosted the return leg three weeks later on 16 October 1968. The match finished up as a 1–1 draw, granting Estudiantes their first Intercontinental Cup title. Juan Ramón Verón opened the scoring in the 6th minute, but Willie Morgan equalised in the 90th minute. Humberto Dionisio Maschio (; 20 February 1933 – 20 August 2024) was an Argentine-Italian association football, football player and manager who played as a forward (association football), forward or midfielder. In sports (especially association football), a two-legged tie is a contest between two teams which comprises two matches or "legs", with each team as the home team in one leg. Bertie Auld
Robert Auld (23 March 1938 – 14 November 2021) was a Scottish football player and manager. He was a member of Celtic's Lisbon Lions, who won the 1967 European Cup Final. As a player, he made more than 200 appearances in the Scottish League for Celtic, Dumbarton and Hibernian, and more than 100 in the Football League in England with Birmingham City. He also earned three caps for Scotland early in his career. He spent six years as manager at Partick Thistle, and was appointed to the club's hall of fame. He also managed Hibernian, Hamilton Academical and Dumbarton. Juan Carlos Cárdenas
Juan Carlos Cárdenas (25 July 1945 – 30 March 2022) was an Argentine football player and coach. He played for a number of clubs in Argentina and Mexico as well as playing for the Argentina national team. He was known by the nickname "El Chango" which was a common name for people from the north of Argentina. Club career Cárdenas was spotted in 1962 by Racing Club de Avellaneda playing as a teenager for Unión Santiago. He spent one year on loan in the Argentine 2nd Division with Nueva Chicago before returning to Racing Club in 1964. He was part of the championship winning team of 1966. In 1967, he helped the club to win the Copa Libertadores and later that year he scored the decisive goal against Celtic in the Copa Intercontinental to make Racing Club the first Argentine club to become club champions of the world. Norberto Raffo
Norberto Santiago Raffo (27 April 1939 – 16 December 2008) was an Argentine footballer who played as a striker. He was the Copa Libertadores de América Topscorer in Copa Libertadores 1967 with 14 goals for eventual champions Racing Club, the third highest total ever achieved in a single Copa Libertadores season. Playing career Raffo was born in the city of Avellaneda in the Buenos Aires Province of Argentina. He played for both of the Avellaneda giants Independiente and Racing Club winning major titles with both teams. He is best remembered by the fans of Banfield for scoring 68 goals in 180 games for the club between 1960 and 1966, making him the 3rd top scorer in the club's history. John Fallon (footballer)
John Fallon (16 August 1940 – 22 July 2025) was a Scottish professional football goalkeeper and member of the Celtic squad that won the European Cup in 1967, which came to be known as the Lisbon Lions. Career Fallon signed for Celtic, the team he supported in childhood, from junior team Fauldhouse United in December 1958 to understudy for Frank Haffey and made his debut in September 1959 against Clyde. He replaced Haffey as first choice goalkeeper in 1963 and played his part in the Cup Winners' Cup run of 1964, where they lost out to the Hungarian team MTK Budapest 4–3 in the semi-finals, after holding a 3–0 lead from the first leg at Celtic Park. Ronnie Simpson
Ronald Campbell Simpson (11 October 1930 – 19 April 2004) was a Scottish football player and coach. He is mainly remembered for his time with Celtic, where he was the goalkeeper in the ''Lisbon Lions'' team that won the European Cup in 1967. Earlier in his career, Simpson had won the FA Cup twice with Newcastle United. He also played for Queen's Park, Third Lanark and Hibernian. William McNeill (2 March 1940 – 22 April 2019) was a Scottish association football, football player and manager (association football), manager. He had a long association with Celtic F.C., Celtic, spanning more than sixty years as a player, manager and club ambassador.
