1966 Queensland State Election
Elections were held in the States and territories of Australia, Australian state of Queensland on 28 May 1966 to elect the 78 members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland. The major parties contesting the election were the National Party of Australia – Queensland, Country Party led by Premier of Queensland, Premier Frank Nicklin in coalition the Liberal Party of Australia (Queensland Division), Liberal Party, the Australian Labor Party (Queensland Branch), Labor Party led by Jack Duggan (politician), Jack Duggan. The Country-Liberal coalition won a fourth term in office at the election. Legislative Assembly Of Queensland
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the '' Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s). The Queensland Labor Party, officially known as the Australian Labor Party (State of Queensland) and commonly referred to as Queensland Labor or simply Labor, is the branch of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) in the state of Queensland. Cec Carey
Cecil Charles Carey (21 September 1907 – 26 December 1969) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Carey was born in Toowoomba, Queensland, the son of Richard Cecil Carey and his wife Mary Jane (née Mason). He was educated at Southport State Primary and High Schools and by 1934 was the manager of his father's grocery business. He later owned and managed a 500-acre dairy farm at Mudgeeraba and was a director of Wood's Transport and W Wood Holdings Pty Ltd. By 1956 he was the chairman of Cecil C Carey Pty Ltd. On 18 July 1936 Carey married Melba May Pain and together had a son and daughter. He died on Boxing Day, 1969. Public career At the 1960 Queensland state election, Carey, the candidate for the Country Party, won the re-established seat of Albert. Electoral District Of Albert
Albert was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Queensland which existed from 1887 to 1949 and 1959 to 2017. Albert was named for the Albert River, which runs through the electorate and separates Logan City from City of Gold Coast. It was first created in a redistribution in 1887 ahead of the 1888 colonial election and continued to exist (with various boundary alterations) until 1949, when the Darlington and Southport electorates were created. In 1959, the electorate was established again. The 1971 and 1977 redistributions greatly reduced the area of the electorate and minor changes were made in 1991, including the loss of Carbrook in the north and coastal areas below Paradise Point in the south. Its consistently changing boundaries together with its existence in a high-growth area do not provide consistent political leanings over time, although it showed more inclination towards the Labor Party over time than any other Gold Coast seat. Peter Wood (politician)
Peter Wood (4 November 1935 – 24 January 2010) was an Australian politician. Wood and his identical twin brother Bill were the sons of Les Wood, also a Labor politician. Peter was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Queensland in 1966, representing Toowoomba East; he moved to Toowoomba South in 1972 but was defeated in 1974. Following his defeat Wood spent 22 years on Toowoomba City Council, serving as deputy mayor for 12 of those. Mervyn Anderson
Mervyn John Reginald "Curly" Anderson (4 April 1909 – 14 November 1971) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Anderson was born at Toowoomba, Queensland, the son of John Anderson and his wife Clara Jane (née Harrold). He was educated at Toowoomba State School and upon leaving he was a delivery boy for father's grocery store. He was next proprietor of a service station before being the managing director of Maranoa Transport Pty Ltd and chairman and director of Western Transport Pty Ltd. On 17 January 1935 he married Ethel Roberts Nairne and together had two sons and one daughter. Anderson died suddenly at home in November 1971. Electoral District Of Toowoomba East
The Electoral district of Toowoomba East was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. It was created with the 1960 redistribution and removed by the 1972 redistribution. The seat was based on the City of Toowoomba. The member for Toowoomba, Mervyn Anderson successfully stood for election in Toowoomba East in 1960 after his previous seat was lost in the redistribution. The sitting member, Peter Wood, successfully stood for election in the new seat of Toowoomba South in the 1972 election. Bill Kaus
William Bernard Kaus (24 May 1923 – 20 December 2006) was a businessman and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Kaus was born at Kangaroo Point, Queensland, to parents William Rahman Kaus and his wife Doreen May (née Baker). He was involved in the family business, Kaus Bros Bedding Manufacturers. In World War II he joined the Royal Australian Air Force and was assigned as a Flying officer to the 161 Squadron. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and France's highest honour, the Legion of Honour in 2005. On 12 June 1948 Kaus married Neth Florette Hutchinson and together had two sons and two daughters (one of whom was the federal MP Andrea West). William Edward Baxter (1907–1978) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life William Edward Baxter was born on 29 May 1907 in Chinchilla, Queensland, the son of Catherine Baxter. He attended Chinchilla State School. He married May Reardon on 29 Sep 1929; the couple had 2 daughters. He worked for Queensland Railways as a cleaner and clerk. Politics At the 1953 state election, Baxter successfully contested the electoral district of Norman as a candidate of the Labor and entered the Queensland Legislative Assembly. He held the seat in the 1956 and 1957 elections. At the 1960 election, he successfully contested the neighbouring seat of Hawthorne, which he retained in 1963. Hawthorne was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1960 to 1972. It was established in the redistribution before the 1960 election from parts of the former district of Norman and the district of Bulimba. It was abolished ahead of the 1972 election and its areas absorbed into surrounding districts, mostly Bulimba. Electoral District Of Fassifern
Fassifern was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1873 to 1992. It was based on the area south of Ipswich and stretched toward the New South Wales border, although in subsequent redistributions was reduced in size away from the growing Brisbane area. It was named after the Fassifern Valley. Fassifern was a safe Country/National district for most of its existence. It was abolished in the 1991 redistribution under the Goss government, and was largely replaced by the new district of Beaudesert.
