1966 CIAU University Cup
The 1966 CIAU Men's University Cup Hockey Tournament (4th annual) was held in Sudbury, Ontario. The Laurentian Voyageurs served as tournament hosts. Road to the Cup MIAA season Note: No playoffs. With the field increasing to five teams, the entrants now arranged by a new method; the participants would be arranged into two groupings, last year's finalists and non-finalists. The two groups would be sorted independently with the finalists being given the top two seeds and the non-finalists seeds three through five. The top three seeds would then receive byes into the semifinal round with the top overall seed awaiting the winner of the lone quarterfinal match. Sudbury, officially the City of Greater Sudbury, is the largest city in Northern Ontario by population, with a population of 166,004 at the 2021 Canadian Census. WCIAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament
The Western Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's ice hockey tournament was an annual conference championship held between member teams. History In 1962, the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union announced that it would be holding the first national collegiate tournament in 1963. In response, the Western Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union (WCIAU), reformed as the Western Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Association (WCIAA) and its champion would automatically receive a berth into the University Cup tournament. The move prompted Manitoba to return to the conference, bringing the number of members back up to four. In 1964, British Columbia was forced to withdraw due to high travel expenses, however, the addition of Calgary allowed the league to remain a foursome. Two years later, UBC returned and the league held its first postseason tournament thanks to a tie for first in the standings.
