1965 English Greyhound Derby
The 1965 English Greyhound Derby took place during June with the final being held on 26 June 1965 at White City Stadium. The winner was Chittering Clapton and the winning owners, father and son, Victor Leah and Peter Leah received £5,000. English Greyhound Derby
The English Greyhound Derby is the most prestigious race on the British greyhound racing calendar, with a history stretching back to 1927. It was first held at White City Stadium, but moved to Wimbledon Stadium in 1985, and then Towcester Greyhound Stadium in 2017, Nottingham in 2019 and back to Towcester in 2021. Only four greyhounds have won the event twice, Mick the Miller, Patricias Hope, Rapid Ranger and Westmead Hawk. Trainer Charlie Lister OBE has won the event a record seven times. Endless Gossip
Endless Gossip was a racing greyhound during the 1950s. He won the 1952 English Greyhound Derby. Early life He was bred by Henry Ernest Gocher, a retired cattle breeder. The choice of sire and dam was determined by Gocher's belief that greyhounds could be bred using the same genetic theories he had used for many years in raising prize beef cattle. He purchased the 1949 English Greyhound Derby champion Narrogar Ann and mated her to the 1948 English Greyhound Derby champion with the idea that this would result in a champion litter. The litter was whelped in March 1950 and they were given names with the initials EG after his own name. Both the sire and dam had been trained by Leslie Reynolds, which was also his chosen trainer for his pick of the new litter. The 1965 UK & Ireland Greyhound Racing Year was the 39th year of greyhound racing in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Roll of honour Summary The industry experienced a small rise in attendances and totalisator turnover for the first time since 1946. The National Greyhound Racing Club (NGRC) affiliated tracks saw 11,213,730 paying customers at 5972 meetings with tote turnover of £58,480,219. However the possibility of future increases was unlikely because there was competition from television, which had found its way into many of Britain's households, bingo halls (a recent gambling rival) which was now established and dance halls pulled in the younger generation. In addition many companies that owned tracks had evaluated that selling them for redevelopment brought large short term financial gain, especially in major cities. Epping, Essex
Epping is a market town and civil parish in the Epping Forest district of the County of Essex, England. The town is northeast from the centre of London, is surrounded by the northern end of Epping Forest, and on a ridge of land between the River Roding and River Lea valleys. Juvenile (greyhounds)
The Juvenile is a greyhound racing competition held annually at Towcester Greyhound Stadium. Race history It was inaugurated in 1957 at Wimbledon Stadium and was known as the Greyhound Express Merit Puppy Trophy but in 1964 it was renamed the Juvenile. The event is an invitation competition for the best six greyhounds who still have a puppy status. In 2017 the race switched to Central Park Stadium in Sittingbourne following the closure of Wimbledon Stadium. The relocation of the competition to Central Park continued a family legacy for the Cearns family who had been connected with the race when it was first held in 1957. From 2018 the competition was held at Owlerton Stadium before switching to Towcester Greyhound Stadium in 2021. Cesarewitch (greyhounds)
The Cesarewitch is a greyhound racing competition held at Crayford Stadium. It was originally one of the classic races held in the British racing calendar and was inaugurated in 1928 and held at West Ham Stadium until its closure in 1972. The event switched to Belle Vue Stadium until 1995 when it was transferred to Greyhound Racing Association (GRA) sister track Catford Stadium. The GRA closed Catford in 2000 and switched the Cesarewitch to their newly-acquired track Oxford Stadium. Despite the event moving four times it remained a major competition until its demise in 2012 at Oxford. In 2020, the competition was brought back by Entain and was held at their stadia of Romford Stadium and Crayford and sponsored by the company's brand Ladbrokes Coral as a category 1 race. Magourna Reject
Magourna Reject was a racing greyhound during the 1950s. He won two classic races and was one of the leading greyhounds of the decade. Early life He was bred by John Murphy in Coachford and whelped during March 1950. Racing career Magourna Reject was trained by Noreen Collin at Walthamstow Stadium and owned by Mrs Frances Chandler, the wife of William Chandler. Collin's kennels were at High Warren, Theydon Manor, in Epping. After winning the 1951 Trafalgar Cup, a major competition for puppies, Magourna Reject went into the 1952 English Greyhound Derby as the ante post favourite. However he disappointed and was eliminated during the first round and his great rival Endless Gossip went on to win the competition. White City Stadium
White City Stadium was a stadium located in White City, London, England. Built for the 1908 Summer Olympics, it hosted the finish of the first modern marathon and other sports like swimming, speedway, boxing, show jumping, athletics, stock car racing, concerts and a match at the 1966 World Cup. From 1927, it was a venue for greyhound racing, hosting the English Greyhound Derby until its closure in 1984. The stadium was demolished in 1985 and the site is now occupied by White City Place. Wembley Greyhounds was the Greyhound racing in the United Kingdom, greyhound racing operation held at Wembley Stadium (1923), Wembley Stadium in London. History Origins After the 1924-25 British Empire Exhibition Wembley Stadium was in liquidation before eventually being purchased by Arthur Elvin. For the stadium to survive into the future it required much needed revenue and it was greyhound racing that provided it.
