1964 Havering London Borough Council Election
The 1964 Havering Council election took place on 7 May 1964 to elect members of Havering London Borough Council in London, England. The whole council was up for election and the council went into no overall control. Background These elections were the first to the newly formed borough. Previously elections had taken place in the Municipal Borough of Romford and Hornchurch Urban District. The borough and urban district was joined to form the new London Borough of Havering by the London Government Act 1963. A total of 146 candidates stood in the election for the 55 seats being contested across 20 wards. These included a full slate from the Labour party, while the Conservative and Liberal parties stood 44 and 19 respectively. Other candidates included 24 Independents and 4 Communists. There were 15 three-seat wards and 5 two-seat wards. The council was elected in 1964 as a "shadow authority" but did not start operations until 1 April 1965. Havering London Borough Council, also known as Havering Council, is the local authority for the London Borough of Havering in Greater London, England. Hylands was an electoral ward in the London Borough of Havering from 1965 to 2022. The ward was first used in the 1964 elections and last used at the 2018 elections. It returned councillors to Havering London Borough Council. The ward covered the northwest part of Hornchurch that blends into southern Romford. The name came from Hylands Park. Hilldene was an electoral ward in the London Borough of Havering from 1965 to 2002. The ward was first used in the 1964 elections and last used for the 1998 elections. It returned councillors to Havering London Borough Council. The ward was subject to a boundary revision in 1978 that increased the number of councillors from two to three. The ward covered part of the London County Council-built Harold Hill estate that was completed in 1958. Michael Ward (British Politician)
Michael John Ward (7 April 1931 – 25 March 2009) was a British Labour politician. Ward was educated at Royal Liberty Grammar School, Romford and Manchester University. He became a local government advisor and director of a public relations firm. He was elected to Romford Borough Council in 1958, and was subsequently elected to its replacement, Havering London Borough Council, in 1964. He served as leader of the council at Havering from 1971 to 1974. He was a member of the Essex river authority from 1964 and local government officer at the Labour Party 1961–65. Having contested the seat three times previously, losing by three votes in 1966 after seven recounts and by 22 votes in February 1974, Ward was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Peterborough in the October 1974 general election, defeating the Conservative Party's incumbent Sir Harmar Nicholls. Ken Weetch
Kenneth Thomas Weetch (born 17 September 1933) is a British former Labour Party politician in England. Early life Weetch was born on 17 September 1933. He was educated at Newbridge Grammar School and the London School of Economics. He then qualified as a teacher and held various posts in education. Parliamentary career Having unsuccessfully fought Saffron Walden in 1970, he was elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Ipswich at the October 1974 general election.
