1964 Claxton Shield
The 1964 Claxton Shield was the 25th annual Claxton Shield, it was held at the Albert Park in Melbourne, Victoria. The participants were South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and Queensland. The series final was between South Australia and Victoria, with South Australia defeating the Victorians led by newcomer Ian Chappell who drove in seven runs in the final alone. Conditions The 1964 series was played in poor conditions, with rain being a factor across most of the tournament. The ABC reported "after four days the grounds were quagmires and baseball has never been played under worse conditions". Queensland Baseball Association life member Stan Holloway also described one particular match as "a game of baseball played under the worst conditions I have ever seen" and recalled the mud being so thick that a hard line drive to third base was stopped dead on the full. Ian Chappell
Ian Michael Chappell (born 26 September 1943) is a former cricketer who played for South Australia and Australia. He captained Australia between 1971 and 1975 before taking a central role in the breakaway World Series Cricket organisation. Born into a cricketing family—his grandfather and brother also captained Australia—Chappell made a hesitant start to international cricket playing as a right-hand middle-order batsman and spin bowler. 1966 Claxton Shield
The 1966 Claxton Shield was the 27th annual Claxton Shield, it was held in Adelaide, South Australia. The participants were South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and Queensland. The series was won by South Australia who finished ahead of Victoria on run percentage for their 9th title. The standard of the tournament was of poor quality with 114 errors committed over the 20 games. The 1966 Shield also marked the start of modern Australian players getting signed to the Major League system with Neil Page of South Australia getting signed to the Cincinnati Reds and Sid Thompson from New South Wales signing with the Philadelphia Phillies. Shortstop
Shortstop, abbreviated SS, is the baseball or softball fielding position between second and third base, which is considered to be among the most demanding defensive positions. Historically the position was assigned to defensive specialists who were typically poor at batting and were often placed at the bottom of the batting order. Today, shortstops are often able to hit well and many are placed at the top of the lineup. In the numbering system used by scorers to record defensive plays, the shortstop is assigned the number 6. More hit balls go to the shortstop than to any other position, as there are more right-handed hitters in baseball than left-handed hitters, and most hitters have a tendency to pull the ball slightly. Queensland State Baseball Team
Queensland Rams compete in the Claxton Shield Baseball Championship in Australia. The Rams were one of the founding teams of the Claxton Shield in 1934 and competed as ''Queensland'' until 1988. Between 1988 and 1999, the Claxton Shield was awarded to the winner of the Australian Baseball League. In 1999, the Rams were invited to join the International Baseball League of Australia in which they competed for 2 seasons (1999-2000 and 2002). After this point, the Claxton Shield reverted to a competition similar to that of 1988.
