1964 Camden London Borough Council Election
The 1964 Camden Council election took place on 7 May 1964 to elect members of Camden London Borough Council in London, England. The whole council was up for election and the Labour Party gained control of the council. Background These elections were the first to the newly formed borough. Previously elections had taken place in the Metropolitan Borough of Hampstead, Metropolitan Borough of Holborn and Metropolitan Borough of St Pancras. These boroughs were joined to form the new London Borough of Camden by the London Government Act 1963. A total of 169 candidates stood in the election for the 60 seats being contested across 19 wards. These included a full slate from the Conservative and Labour parties, while the Liberals stood 31 candidates. Other candidates included 14 from the Communist party, 2 Independents and 2 Independent Labour. There were 10 three-seat wards, 6 four-seat wards and 3 two-seat wards. Leila Campbell
Leila Campbell (née Jaffe; 10 August 1911 – 2 October 1993) was a British Labour party politician. She was a former London County Council, Greater London Council and Inner London Education Authority member, and chairman of the Hampstead Theatre Board. Early life Campbell was born on 10 August 1911 in Birkenhead, Cheshire to parents Rebecca (née Neiman, 1879–1965) and Myer Jaffe (1883–1961). She was educated at the Belvedere school, Liverpool, trained to be an art teacher and worked as a dress designer and cutter. During the early 1930s the family lived at 41 Parkfield Road, Toxteth, Liverpool and by 1939, they were living at 5 Devonshire Road, Toxteth. Alan Greengross
Sir Alan David Greengross (15 April 1929 – 13 August 2018) was a British politician, who served as the final leader of the Conservative Party on the Greater London Council (GLC). Born in London, Alan's father Morris was Mayor of Holborn in the 1960s, while his sister Wendy became a well known counsellor. Greengross was educated at University College School in Hampstead, and then undertook National Service with the Royal Air Force before studying law at Trinity College, Cambridge. After graduation, he joined the family business, the precision engineering firm Indusmond (Diamond Tools) Ltd; he later became its chair and managing director. In 1959, he married Sally Rosengarten, who later became Director General of Age Concern England. Greengross was elected to Camden London Borough Council when it was first established, in 1964, and he became leader of the Conservative Party group on the council, the official opposition. Archie Macdonald
Archibald James Florence "Archie" Macdonald (2 May 1904 – 20 April 1983) was a Scottish Liberal and later Conservative politician, who also had a career in business. Early life and career Macdonald was born in Uniondale, Western Cape in South Africa. His father was of an eye surgeon who came originally from Aberdeen. The family then moved to Australia, where Macdonald received his education at Chatswood Grammar School, near Sydney, New South Wales and the Royal Australian Naval College. During the 1920s, he was a successful wool buyer, and when he came to Britain in the 1930s, he and his brother set up their own business importing Australian fruits. He volunteered for service in 1939, but was turned down, as he had a serious thyroid problem. In 1945, he married the Hon.
