1963 African Cup Of Nations
The 1963 African Cup of Nations was the fourth edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, the association football championship of Africa ( CAF). For the third consecutive time the hosts won the African Cup. The format was changed to two groups of 3 teams each, with the group winners playing the final, and the runners-up playing the third place playoff. The final in Accra on 1 December saw the hosts beating Sudan 3–0 to win the title. This tournament, and the previous one, are the only Africa Cup of Nations tournaments with more than four goals-per-game average. Hassan Ahmed El-Shazly (; 13 November 1943 – 20 April 2015) was an Egyptian footballer. He is considered as a historic player of Tersana. He was described as a "devastating shooter" and "lethal with both feet". He also played for Egypt national football team and is the Africa Cup of Nations all-time top Egyptian scorer, and the all-time top scorer of the Egyptian Premier League. Wilberforce Mfum (28 August 1936 – 11 May 2025) was a Ghanaian professional association football forward who played professionally in Ghana and the United States. He was a member of the Ghanaian Olympic soccer team at the 1964 Summer Olympics. Club career Mfum played for Asante Kotoko in Ghana. In 1968, Mfum played for the Baltimore Bays of the National Professional Soccer League. In 1969, he joined Ukrainian SC of the German American Soccer League. Asuquo Ekpe (died 30 January 2016) was a Nigerian international footballer. He made his international debut for Nigeria on 6 October 1956 against Togo. Ekpe became Nigeria's first goalscorer in an Africa Cup of Nations when he scored against United Arab Republic in the 1963 Africa Cup of Nations. Abdelmajid Al-Chetali (; born 4 July 1939) is a Tunisian football coach and former player who played 70 games with the national team and scored four goals. He also participated in the 1960 Summer Olympics. He is considered one of the characters who shaped and prolonged the legend of the Étoile Sportive du Sahel (nicknamed Majda). He received only one yellow card during his career. Italo Vassalo
Italo Vassallo (1940 – 30 July 2021) was an Italian-Eritrean footballer. He played for Ethiopia internationally, scoring in their 1962 Africa Cup of Nations final victory over Egypt. His half-brother is Luciano Vassallo, a former footballer for the Ethiopian team. Club career Vassallo made his debut at Hamasien where he won the Ethiopian First Division for the first time in 1957. When Vassallo's half-brother Luciano moved to Cotton Factory Club, Italo joined him at 17 years old. They would go on to win the Ethiopian First Division four times at Cotton FC before retiring in 1973. Luciano Vassalo
Luciano Vassallo (15 August 1935 – 16 September 2022), also spelled Luciano Vassalo, was a footballer who played as a midfielder. Born in Italian Eritrea, he played for the Ethiopia national team in the 1960s, captaining the winning team at the 1962 African Cup of Nations, Ethiopia's only trophy to date. He was known for his skill, and mostly for his volleys, free kicks and penalties. He played professionally with Cotton Factory Club along with his half-brother Italo.
