1962 Natal Grand Prix
The 2nd Natal Grand Prix was a motor race, run to South African Formula One-style rules, held on 22 December 1962 at Westmead Circuit, South Africa. The field was split into two heats, with a subsequent final. The heats consisted of 22 laps, and the final was run over 33 laps, and was won by British driver Trevor Taylor in his Lotus 25. The event was marred by the death of Rhodesian driver Gary Hocking, who was killed in practice driving the Rob Walker Racing Team Lotus 24. Jim Clark posted the fastest time in practice, and was on pole position for the first heat. However, after exchanging the lead several times with Richie Ginther, he experienced problems during the heat and was classified 12th. Ginther won the heat with local driver Bruce Johnstone finishing second. Cooper Car Company
The Cooper Car Company is a British car manufacturer founded in December 1947 by Charles Cooper and his son John Cooper. Together with John's boyhood friend, Eric Brandon, they began by building racing cars in Charles's small garage in Surbiton, Surrey, England, in 1946. Through the 1950s and early 1960s they reached motor racing's highest levels as their mid-engined, single-seat cars competed in both Formula One and the Indianapolis 500, and their Mini Cooper dominated rally racing. The Cooper name lives on in the Cooper versions of the Mini production cars that are built in England, but is now owned and marketed by BMW. Petrus Reininus Johannes "Peter" van Niekerk (born 30 November 1971 in Hazerswoude) is a sailor from the Netherlands, who represented his country for the first time at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. With Roy Heiner as helmsman and Dirk de Ridder as fellow crew member, Van Niekerk took the 4th place in the Soling. In the 2004 Olympics in Athena Van Niekerk made his second Olympic appearance. Mike Harris (25 May 1939 – 8 November 2021) was a Northern Rhodesian racing driver who later moved to South Africa. He took part in one World Championship Formula One Grand Prix, the 1962 South African Grand Prix, from which he retired. Career Harris was born in Mufulira, Northern Rhodesia. Samuel Tingle (24 August 1921 – 19 December 2008) was an English-born racing driver from Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. Louis Douglas Serrurier (9 December 1920 in Germiston – 4 June 2006) was a racing driver and racing car constructor from South Africa. He participated in 3 Formula One World Championship Grands Prix in the 1960s, only racing in the South African Grand Prix event, debuting on 29 December 1962. He scored no championship points. Racing car constructor Serrurier built a series of racing cars under the name of LDS, after his initials. The first was based on a Cooper, and later cars were based on Brabhams.
