1962 Madras State Legislative Assembly Election
The third legislative assembly election to the Madras state (presently Tamil Nadu) was held on 21 February 1962. The Indian National Congress party, led by K. Kamaraj, won the election. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam made significant in-roads in the election and emerged as the second party for the first time by winning 50 seats. 1962 Election remains the most recent election in which Indian National Congress formed a majority Government in the State as its support has heavily declined due to rise of Dravidian political parties. Constituencies Two member constituencies were abolished in 1961 by the ''Two-Member Constituencies(Abolition) Act, 1961''. 38 two member constituencies were abolished and an equal number of single member constituencies were established and reserved for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates. Legislature Of Tamil Nadu
The Tamil Nadu Legislature is the Unicameralism, unicameral legislature of the States and union territories of India, Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The Legislature is composed of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and List of governors of Tamil Nadu, the state's governor. Until 1 November 1986, the Tamil Nadu Legislature was a bicameral legislature which included the Tamil Nadu Legislative Council as the upper house, with the Legislative Assembly being the lower house. In 2010, the erstwhile Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government took steps to revive the Tamil Nadu Legislative Council and convert the legislature back into a bicameral one, but the administration lost power before completing the transition. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government which assumed power in 2011 expressed its intent not to revive the Legislative Council. Swatantra Party
The Swatantra Party was an Indian classical liberal political party that existed from 1959 to 1974. It was founded by C. Rajagopalachari in reaction to what he felt was the Jawaharlal Nehru-dominated Indian National Congress's increasingly socialist and statist outlook. The party had a number of distinguished leaders, most of them old Congressmen, like C. Rajagopalachari, Minoo Masani, N. G. Ranga, Darshan Singh Pheruman, Udham Singh Nagoke and K. M. Munshi. The provocation for the formation of the party was the left turn that the Congress took at Avadi and the Nagpur Resolutions. Swatantra stood for a market-based economy and the dismantling of the " Licence Raj" although it opposed ''laissez-faire'' policies. Swatantra was not a religion-based party, unlike the Hindu nationalism of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. Satyavani Muthu
Sathyavani Muthu (15 February 1923 – 11 November 1999) was an Indian politician and influential leader from Chennai, Tamil Nadu. She was a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu, Rajya Sabha member and Union Minister. She began her political career as a member of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, began her own party, Thazhthapattor Munnetra Kazhagam and later joined the Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
